Canon EOS R viewfinder aspect ratio

Hello everyone,

With the Canon EOS R, is it possible to have the aspect ratio that we chose directly in the electronic viewfinder, to see and shoot directly with the right ratio?

For example, if I choose the format 4x3, will the viewfinder show me a 4x3, or still the native 3x2 ?

If this option exist, it will be extra.

I shoot on Canon 5DIV and this option is only on the back screen (for 4x3 ratio, the screen add black mask on the right and left of the screen... but not in the reflex viewfinder).

Thanks for your help,

Louvant

I can't help you with this question, but just to suggest that since this is really new camera, it is possible that no one who reads this forum has yet acquired or used the new EOS R. If you don't hear from someone in the next few days it probably makes sense to download the owners manual from Canon's website and see for yourself if the R has this feature. Or you can just download the manual now and don't need to wait for a response.

You can set the aspect ratio or even a crop mode (1.6) in the quick menu. This will be in the viewfinder. When shooting Raw the data is there for the full frame, but it is pre cropped when brought into lightroom at the aspect ratio so if you reset crop in lightroom it will go back to 3x2. If you set crop mode, the data is lost even in Raw.

I very good point ! Thanks for your answer and details.

Nice to be able to compose and shoot directly in the correct aspect ratio.

As we hear on mirrorless reviews « what you see is what you get » even if I shoot 4x3 !

It is the same when I shoot RAW on 5D IV : I have alway the full native 3x2 RAW but pre cropped on Lightroom, or Camera RAW.
