Please give more details.

On my list:

  • Canon EOS 5D Mk IV, Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 and maybe 2 more zooms. The body is not dirt cheap but you can save a couple of bucks on Canon and 3rd party lenses compared to other brands' and the longer ones tend to be lighter than Nikon's. Stills quality should be state of the art at the end of the day. Video should be OK, you get 4K out, admittedly in an annoying format but have a great AF for video too and yes the body is lightweight compared to other FF SLRs. - SLR advantage: Great battery life for stills.
  • Smaller prints and only 1080P footage desired? - Look at Canon's various offerings again. - Rebels, 80D... I haven't handled them but their pricing looks convincing / unbeatable.
  • If 4 K footage is your main goal: Panasonic GH5
  • Sony A7 R II? You'll need a couple of spare batteries but it is smaller, lighter and probably a better video camera than the Canons. - Lenses might be more expensive though.
  • Some people fall for Fuji X-T2. It might be less well performing than a Canon or Sony when you shoot action pictures that you are willing to edit. - OTOH Fuji's straight out of camera JPEGs look great, lenses are quite decent and the camera looks cute.

Sorry I am not into the action cam, bridge camera, cell phone and P&S Markets. - You'll most likely find roundups and reviews on dpreview.com

Look for something with an eye-level viewfinder, preferably electronic, and a zoom lens with the equivalent of 24-70 mm. Image stabilization is good to have, for photos indoors or in low light. It is hard to get steady shots viewing at arms length on a back screen, and hard to see in daylight. Other than that, it depends on what type of quality and flexibility do you want, and how much is too much, too heavy? What is your level of experience? What camera do you use now?

I have a Sony A7Rii, and there is nothing I would rather use for travel. That's because photography is probably my primary reason for travel, However I would be comfortable carrying any of the other cameras described by Jochen. I would also add the Sony A7ii to the list, which costs half as much as the A7Rii, also with build-in image stabilization and HD (2K) video. Sony lenses tend to be large, heavy and expensive, with many exceptions. Fuji lenses are also very good, but smaller and less expensive, in part because Fuji cameras have APS-C sized sensors (16x24 mm), whereas the Sony is full-frame (24x26 mm).

Most cameras willl produce high quality HD (1080p), which is easily displayed on a TV. 4K has twice the resolution and take 4x the memory, but 4K TVs are not all that common, and editing requires a lot of computing horsepower. Many pros shoot in 4K and downsample to 2K, with better results than shooting 2K directly.

Pocket cameras are legion, and one is as good as another, depending on specific features you may like.

What do you consider a reasonable price? Without knowing a bit what budget you're thinking about, it's pretty hard to answer.

Exactly. Travel gear is all about compromise: how much you're willing to spend, how much gear you're willing to lug around; the types of images that will be "good enough" when you won't or can't bring a ton of gear. If it fits your budget, I would recommend the Sony RX100 V as the ultimate travel camera.

  • 4 weeks later...
I use a Canon SX50 bridge camera which is my version of "close enough to DSLR". Its big enough for me to feel like I am holding a real camera and not a little cigarette box, it has awesome optical zoom, it has all the manual functions I like using when I want full control of what I am taking, great video quality, shoots in RAW so I have good editing control, and its been on a gazillion travels since I bought it in late 2013
