Selling during a street art festival

Recommended Posts

Walking down Santa Fe in Denver during First Friday was inspirational seeing everyone out sharing one similar concept, art. I was going in and out of photo studios of well known photographers to smaller niche photogs, I noticed one thing, they all have worked their way up that medium to share their artwork with the world. I have a ton of travel photographs, fine art, documentary work, etc., etc. I've got a month to prepare but want to station myself on a corner and try to sell some of my photographs. The budget I am giving myself for this upcoming event is $500 and I hope to at least make my money back, I know I might not sell everything and make it all back in one sitting.

For what I have read so far, Adorama has a phenomenal printing service. Besides that, I'll need mattes for the photos and plastic sheets to go over to protect. Will also need a sticker to go on the back of the photo to give a little story to each photo. I've been able to track down a few canvas holders to display. Any other things I may need, let me know what you think!

I wish you luck. Selling photos as art can certainly work, but it's unpredictable. I'd like to know how it worked out for you, so please report. At worst, you will lose $500. That's not catastrophic, and you will probably enjoy the experience.

FWIW, there is only one photographer that I would buy from, but his photos cost about as much as a new car. For better or worse, many people don't see the value of photography as art pieces. Someone shared a story about this:

Thoughts after trying to sell photographs at an art market By Dirk Dom

IMO, the whole point of photography is infinite reproducibility, as opposed to painting, where works are one-off. Mind you, there is such a thing as bronze casting, where multiple copies of a statue can be made. But printing photos is easy, and what is easy becomes common, and what becomes common becomes cheap. Unless you're doing darkroom prints.

Unless you're doing darkroom prints.

Which people still don't buy if you're not in a place where they understand the difference. (yes, I've had a table at a local craft fair. I got lots of oohs and aahhs about the fact that I was still using a darkroom, but not one print sold.)

OP - You'll need to have a way to accept credit cards as well as keep cash safe. Signs; some way to keep the prints organized, but showing; think about different sizes and price points and how you'll show them. Make sure the prints are what you want as far as color and sharpness, etc.. Don't wait until the last minute to order the prints and get things ready.
