Does anyone know:new replacement plate/quick release Bogen 3029

I have still been using my Bogen now Manifrotto 3021 with 3029 head many years. Used to use it with a Mamiya RB in my large format days. I used to have a linhof plate but doesn't conform to my DSLR. Does anyone know if there is a new mounting plate/quick release that I can use on this old head? The caulk on the tripod is so worn my dslr slips in the vertical orientation. I also have another 3021 with a 3025 that was given to me and I could probably make that work. It is probably time to step up to a new tripod, but it seems (not to sound old) nothing is made like it used to be. Many thanks!

I believe the 3029 head has no quick release of its own, so basically any QR adapter can be attached to it. Manfrotto makes, or at least used to make, adapters for its various plate designs that one can add. Or you could get a fairly inexpensive Arca-Swiss type adapter (Chinese ones, some quite nice, abound) and use the ubiquitous plates for that on your equipment. To keep the adapter from slipping on the head, you could attach it very tight, or even add a set screw to make it permanent. If you're mounting a new adapter it might hold better if you remove the old cork from the head, and attach it metal to metal. You could even add some glue. Arca Swiss plates can be had in all sorts of sizes and shapes, including custom camera fitting and L plates. The near universal adoption of this system has resulted in a lot of inexpensive Chinese plates that are easy to get.

If you like the head design and size but want a quick release built into the tripod, the 3030 is the same head with a square QR plate that is still available, including an architectural plate that prevents twisting when the camera is held vertically. You might be able to find that head used somewhere.

I like the big old Manfrottos, and I would not worry about the age as long as you can still carry it around. It's very strong and stable.

Why not just replace the cork?

Cork isn't ideal as a high-friction material even when new, IME. It quickly compresses and takes a polish.

I'm sure that thin sheet rubber or solid neoprene can be easily bought from internet or craft-shop sources. A tube of contact adhesive and you're set to go.

I'm not at all impressed with Manfrotto's latest plasticky head offerings, nor with the design of their QR plates.

If you don't want to repair your 3029 head, I'd suggest you look at other makes for a replacement. The Manfrotto legs have a standard 3/8" screw fitting that should take almost any decent head.

Too late to edit, but PS:

I recently had some slippage on an old hexagonal Manfrotto QR plate. I tracked the issue to a sticky 1/4" screw and jam-nut. A quick disassembly, a wipe of grease and I was able to screw the camera down much tighter. No more twist or slippage!

Cork is compliant enough that it will form a shallow ridge to help keep the camera from turning. You can purchase cork gasket material in several thicknesses at an automotive shop. You can also purchase rubber gasket material from the same place, but I find cork works better for non-slip applications.

The only way to absolutely prevent turning is if the QR plate is machined to conform to the shape of the camera. Arca-type plates by RRS and Kirk are made to fit a specific camera. The plate itself is a V-block, matched to a clamp on the tripod head. While the components can be mated to a 3-way head, they work best with a ball head, which can be easily turned to match the orientation of the plate. You can also use L-plates, which allow the vertical position, keeping the camera centered on the head.
