Canon FX shutter stuck

Recommended Posts

Hello,
I recently purchased a Canon FX on eBay and it worked perfectly fine until yesterday. Today I tried to take a photo, but the shutter was stuck and the mirror is locked up, regardless of the position of the mirror lock lever. The shutter seems to be properly closed and the mirror is not stuck either. I can move the advance lever up to a third of its way and the shutter curtain moves a bit, too, but I cant pull it further than that.
I already tried looking for solutions for this problem, but all I could find was either a stuck shutter curtain or a stuck mirror, but none of these helped me.
I would appreciate it if someone could help me with this problem.

It could be any number of things.

One of the easiest things to do is to take off the bottom plate and look at the film advance mechanism. Sometimes a piece of film, dirt, etc, will get caught in the mechanism and jam the camera. Remove that, and you may be good to go.

Other than that, you may have to send the camera in for a CLA.

Sounds as if the camera is not completing the shutter cycle which is caused (usually) by the second curtain not finishing it's travel with enough force to reset the wind lock and release the mirror.

You can easily check this by removing the lens, opening the back, and lightly grasping the shutter curtain between thumb and forefinger, and then trying to gently move the curtain toward the rewind crank side of the camera. If it moves a millimeter or so, clicks, and drops the mirror, you have found the problem.

Let us know if that works.

Thank you both for your responses.

I tried Michaels idea and it somehow worked. At first I thougt that, because I could move the shutter a few centimeters without hearing a click, but after a bit trying I somehow got it to work again and now it works properly again. :)
Thank you for your help. :)

I have seen some lock-ups like this that clear when you wind (but you say you can't do that), when you change the shutter speed dial, or some other dial. But not always.

When my Nikon FM was new, maybe one month old, it locked up. I took it to the official repair place, they fixed it, and suggested completing the wind cycle (with the rewind button pressed) before rewinding. Never had a problem after that.

It's probably dirty, they usually are after 45 or 50 years. It may tend to become more fussy at cooler temperatures and better when it's warmer. The real solution is having it cleaned, which is not a huge job but unfortunately there aren't as many camera repair places around any more as there used to be.
