mohamedelsayyed
I am looking for a cheap flash for the Olympus 35 SPn rangefinder camera. I just found one on ebay sold for $188 which is actually very high. I got the camera itself for $100. Is there any alternative models? Because the standard one PS200 is very rare and expensive.
SCL
Unless you're committed to using Olympus flashes, almost any flash unit made during the era your camera was manufactured will work with the camera, and there are lots of these for $20 or less on Ebay. I happen to like the old Vivitar 2500 model and use one on many of my cameras, as well as a larger and more powerful Metz unit.
john_robison3
What are you looking for size wise? If I'm not mistaken the Sp has a GN lens so that any small manual flash will work fine. If looking for a correct period flash sold at the same time as the 35Sp then look on ebay for a Vivitar 252, plentiful and cheap.
mohamedelsayyed
Yeah, both the SP and SPn allow setting the GN on the camera when using a flash. But I'm afraid of incompatibility. Some manual flashes may not respond when attached to the camera.
winfried_buechsenschuetz1
The flash firing mechanism on these cameras is very simple, just a leaf contact which is closed when the shutter is fully open. There are rather incompatibility problems with old flashes and new cameras, many older flashes have a voltage of around 100V between the firing contacts and newer cameras with semiconductor switches may be damaged.
This is NOT the case with the good old SPn. I have to admit that I never used mine with a flash but I used many other cameras of that era with simple flash units and never had any problems.
koray_p
Any flash will do, just avoid weirdass Minolta/Sony ilSO hotshoe flashes! :-) By the way, thanks to Wikipedia, I just learned that "The mechanical design of the accessory shoe now common on most cameras dates back to 1913, when Oskar Barnack, the inventor of the Leica, devised it for attaching an accessory viewfinder." mohamedelsayyed
Thanks for everyone who replied to this post. I got a good deal for an Olympus T20 flash. I searched the internet as well as contacted many ebay sellers offering ones for sale to know if it's compatible or not. But unfortunately, no info. no one knows. As far as I know it works great with old cameras. Anyone has experience using it with the Olympus 35 SP?
knut_schwinzer
Looks like this T20 has no tilt/swivel ability. I would not be happy without that basic feat.
