tom_boston1
Are authorized repair centers allowed to order genuine Nikon parts to repair grey market equipment?

I saw a claim that ordering parts requires providing a US serial number. But that doesn't make sense to me because it doesn't work if an authorized repair station stocks parts.

Is it even legal for Nikon to prevent repairs to grey market cameras like this?

I'd give more weight to what I read here than to most other sources on the internet.

ShunCheung
Authorized Photo Service, linked to by Nick above, repaired my gray market 200mm/f4 macro. Since people can ship so many gray-market Nikon cameras and lenses into the U.S., why can't they ship (gray-market) parts around Nikon USA? As a general comment, I would say that along as there is a market for it so that there is profit, people will find a way to do it.
tom_boston1
I already use Authorized Photo Service and also praise them regularly.

Something I recently heard and was trying to confirm was that Nikon authorized repair centers have to provide serial numbers to order genuine Nikon parts.

If this is the case, then yes, keeping a supply of genuine Nikon grey market parts makes perfect sense.

If an authorized service center works on grey market equipment, do they risk losing their authorized service center status? I suspect not. It wouldn't be any different than an authorized retailer selling grey market. But I'm trying to confirm.

I have a call into APS and will update this thread when I hear back from them. The person I needed to speak with was busy with a customer.
ShunCheung
Authorized Photo Service fixed my gray-market 200mm/f4 AF-D macro back in 2005: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00BxJs

I posted my experience to this forum, all out in the open. And most likely APS has been fixing gray-market Nikon products long before that. After a decade, they haven't lost their authorized status as far as I know.
jack_nordine
I had an issue earlier this year with a stuck filter on a telephoto. The folks at APS fixed it for me at no charge. What a class outfit!
