Any way to sharpen a 'completed' jpeg image?

Recommended Posts

I believe I've 'softened' the skin of a model whose image I took and post-processed, and is here presented. I've tried to 'de-soften' the skin, but without success. I use PS Elements 12. Any suggestions how I might fix this problem with the completed image. I'm open to try software besides PSE.

P.S. reducing the image to < 100kb may make it appear even softer.

00d3rt-553990284.jpg.69a5966549103225421a1a03cf3893c0.jpg

Alan,
One common way of doing this is to duplicate the layer. Under filters select Other - Highpass. Move the slider until you get the effect you want in terms of definition (10 being kinda high). Hit OK, then change layer blend mode to Overlay. If there are areas that don't work, just erase them. There's a lot of info, tutorials about this technique online.
Best of luck.

Alan,

Not sure how you softened it initially, but I was just doing some reading on this myself, and one common way is to use High Pass at around 8, invert it, and blend as overlay, then add another high pass layer as Rick suggests at about 4, do not invert it, and blend it as an overlay and mask it, painting over the areas you want sharper. Here's where I found that technique, which seemed to work well on a group portrait I applied it to using PSE 13:
