alastair_anderson
I've decided to buy Capture NX2 for raw conversion of D800 files. I am a little confused however and wary of making a mistake. I want it for an iMac computer and since I don't have a CD drive all I need is the product key so that I can download it. But possibly there is an advantage to getting the physical pack. Would anyone be able to enlighten me on that score; perhaps there's some kind of manual or something.

Secondly, I'm in the UK and would appreciate any suggestions as to whom I should buy from. Normally I use Amazon, but note that they are indicating a 3 to 6 week waiting period.

I'm aware that this may not be precisely the right place in photo.net for these questions. I'm posting here because you are the people that I trust.
chris_letts
I've always just downloaded and then applied the licence code - I don't think you gain anything by getting the pack (other than a DVD presumably, which you don't actually need)
purplealien
Alastair

I'm UK based too.

I can't help you with the contents of the physical pack I'm afraid, but I downloaded the programme from Nikon and have had no problems on a Windows PC. There are regular updates, and I have no problem downloading and installing those either. I would have no hesitation in going down the download route again with Nikon.

NX2's interface is different from Adobe products. I like it, some don't. Rather than a manual I would very much recommend Mike Hagen's book "Nikon Capture NX2 After the Shoot".

Good luck

Chris

howard_m
You can download teh PDF manual from Nikon or you can get the excellent Jason Odell guide. I wouldn't bother w/ the physical CD/DVD
Matt Laur
Right. Just download the program from Nikon. Install it as a free trial to make sure you like it. The trial version is fully functional in every way. Then buy a license key at your leisure and apply it to the installed instance, and you're off and running.
Hector Javkin
You do get a nicely printed little manual (about 260 pages) if you buy NX2 in the box, but you can also download the PDF version. As others have said, there are better guides than the manual from Nikon. You can even download the free trial of NX2 and then, if you want, buy the box version for the manual and the license number. The way you purchase it will make no difference in your use of the program.
alastair_anderson
Thanks, everyone. By the way, anyone know if I get to use it on more than one computer? Ideally I'd like it on my MacBook Air as well as on the iMac, although that's not critical.

Matt Laur
I've installed it on multiple PCs as well. Have never had a problem with OS upgrades and reinstalls, etc.
Richard Williams
Is there any way of buying just the licence key in the UK? I haven't seen an official Nikon download shop, and suspect the official US shop won't sell it to you. You may have to buy the CD, but perhaps you can use the key from the CD pack to upgrade the freely downloadable demo version to full status? Don't use 3rd party scam sites like 'Imagemixer', who aren't selling it legally.
purplealien
Richard, I originally downloaded the demo from the Nikon website and then I was able to purchase the key directly from them.
alastair_anderson
Richard, I phoned Nikon and they advised me to buy the physical package and then to use the key to download the programme. In fact they pointed me to my nearest authorised Nikon retail outlet. In my case I have ordered the update as I already have Capture NX; I'll be getting the box and then apparently I have to enter the 25 digit key that I already have for Capture NX as well as the key for the upgrade. I have to do it this way because my iMac has no CD drive.
