x100 with external flash question

Hello,

I have the Fuji x100 and want to begin using a synched external flash. I've looked all over but cannot find a strait recommendation for a compatible sync cord to use with the flash unit. I have the EF-42 already as my flash but was hoping someone could give me some advice as to what sync cord and other connectors to buy in order to use this flash externally.

Also, if you have any recommendations on more straightforward flash units to use, that would be helpful, i really just want to shoot manual and need a straightforward set up that works with this camera.

Thanks

You could try a simple hotshoe to P-C socket converter and put the camera into manual mode. According to the manual (page 100) you simply set the "external flash" menu option to "on" to enable a 3rd party flash in the hotshoe. The EF-42 should couple with a hotshoe extender cable, but where you'd find a fuji compatible one I don't know.

A safer (for the camera) alternative to a hotshoe P-C adapter is to use a radio trigger kit. These are available very cheaply as a simple transmitter that fits in the hotshoe, and one or more receivers that couple to the flash(es). I find that a setup like that with the camera set to manual and a shutter speed of 1/200th second works OK with Canon and Nikon DSLRs, but YMMV.

Any sync cord with a pin in the middle of the shoe will work for manual triggering. I use my Nikon iTTL cord, a custom 30

ft model to trigger up to 1/4000 sync speeds. I have also used pocket wizard plus III to trigger up to around 1/1200.

Flash zebra sells manual cords for triggering and any store will sell a third party cord for TTL work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wally, that does help, I'm looking at the SC28 or the Nisson SC01. They seem to work with the x100, but I just want to make sure they would also work with the EF-42 torch. Any thoughts on which would be better or if they would both be options?

You'll only get TTL flash exposure with a compatible extender cable. Almost any other make of hotshoe extender will fire the flash OK, but that particular arrangement of 3 pins to communicate TTL information between camera and flash looks unique to Fuji.

You might want to read this thread here right down to the bottom. Seems if you're handy with a soldering iron you can make a Fuji compatible extender out of a Canon one. I don't know what Fuji are thinking not providing accessories for their own cameras!

BTW, Nikon's 3 pins are in a completely different place from Canon's 4 and Fuji's 3, so I'm not sure how that last poster to the linked thread made it work!?
