b._chris_lee1
Hi everyone,
My little brother is getting married this August in Montreal. They've started researching photographers and asked for my help. I've done the usual filtering through the internet, but I'm having a hard time separating the wheat from the chaff. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on how to hire someone in the MTL area, or someone willing to fly down there?
At the risk of starting a flame war, based on the prices I've been quoted, I can't help but get the uncomfortable feeling that the wedding photo industry - not unlike everything else in the wedding industry - is opportunistically overpriced. Yes, we all know there's a price for talent, that weddings are one-time events that demand the best, and plenty of the photographers on this site are worth every penny of whatever fee sought - but a simple google search reveals a lot of people who should probably be in another line of work.
Cheers,
B. francie_baltazar
I think that most professional photographers are willing to travel. I have read lately that it is a problem for USA photogs to go into Canada for work... so I would encourage you to find someone local - look on Professioanal Photographers of America - look for photogs who are CPP or who are Master Photographers - look for photographers who have won awards for their work. You will pay for that but you will get good photographers. Ask the venue if they have perferred vendors that they use. Look for local professional photographer association for refferals - this will help you narrow your options and still stay in Canada.
david_prouty
Without a budget quoted, I would highly recommend Mark Ridout in Lindsay, Ontario. He and Chantal will go anywhere, and for Montreal, it's not a big travel for them. Of course, he's a big deal photographer, so pricing may be a bit steep, but it can't hurt to make contact with them. They are excellent storytellers in the wedding genre and his slideshows are the BOMB!
Another Canadian photographer I can recommend woud be Robert Watcher.

Websites for each of these guys:

http://www.ridoutphotography.com/

http://robertwatcher.com/
