jon_quincy
I have a Nikon D80 camera and all of the sudden it started showing me an ERR in the display by the shutter button. the camera makes all the noises like it is taking a picture but nothing happens. I have tried different lenes/batteries/memory cards and it wont help. today what i did find out is if i took the lens off and snapped some pictures with no lens on, after a few times err went away. i put my lens back on and it worked, for a few pictures, then got ERR again. this happened afew times, and i was even able to take 46 pictures before ERR came back, but most times i can just get a few.

any ideas of what is wrong? is this something i can fix, or do i need to send it into Nikon? it is not under warranty and i had emailed them and they said they could fix for $200 but wouldnt give me any other details.

Thank You!

jon_quincy
Yes it is, and i have tried several....I dont doubt i will have to send it in, but what gets my goat is the lack of troubleshooting steps that a person can do on their own. I have a ford truck that when the check engine light comes on, i plug in my error code reader and can figure out what is wrong and if it is something that is fixable by me or not.
martynas_photo
Try "master reset" using the dedicated reset button (the tiny one on the side of the camera). check if aperture coupling is ok and moving smoothly on the camera side (also check if lens aperture is set to the smallest value). alternatively try google search (d80 +err) - there are some 100k results, maybe there is a simple solution among them.
I am surprised that Nikon gave you the estimate without seeing the camera, though.

CvhKaar
If master reset, or nothing else helps, i'm not sure wether I'd send it in at that repair price, i thing i would go for a new, or referb , newer model then... but that's just me...
ShunCheung
ERR is a catch all error message. Typically it is something serious that requires repair. The question is whether the D80 is worth fixing.

jon_quincy
the contacts were the lens connects to the camera body? or is there some other contacts i should check into? i have no problem opening the camera up with there is something i can check.

Thanks!
bruce_brown
Jon: Any luck with master reset (not the double green 'return to default'). My D80 has somehow a couple of times picked up a static charge that resisted EVERYTHING but the small master reset ... everything fine since.
ray_dockrey
I also suggest cleaning the contacts. There are YouTube videos that show you how. These are the contacts between the lens and camera body.
