Seeking tips - Kuala Lumpur

I've been to Kuala Lumpur before which i stayed 5 nights. This time Air Asia has started in my country and I got some unbelivably cheap fares which I am spending 2 nights in each of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore.

I have done some research, Singapore has a lot of stuff to shoot as I am into cityscapes. Bangkok is new to me but there is a lot to shoot from the modern "New Bangkok" but more importantly the "Old Bangkok".

But ... I am struggling with Kuala Lumpur. I have been up inside Petrona Towers, which was good and a few snapshots, not stellar shots, so I may not go up Menara (KL) Tower this time. I have visited Kampung Baru (Malay area), Chinatown, Little India, Bukit Bintang, Tikiwangsa Gardens and did a shoot towards the KL Skyline, the National Museum and the National Art Gallery.

I may visit the Islamic Art Gallery and the Old KL Railway Stn this time (which I have not been to) and do more shoots of Petrona but what else is there? I am only in KL for 1 whole day and the next morning. Given the lack of stuff to shoot for my style I am spending a day in Melaka and taste some great food and some photography, I haven't been to Melaka before. I enjoy doing sunrise and sunset photography but I found it lacking in KL. Sunset was ok for Petrona taking lots of shots at diff angles etc .. but sunrise a lot of the buildings were still dark and they had the ugly garage doors (like other parts of Asia). Without travelling out of KL, I've struggled for subjects. At anytime of the day, if one travels away from Petrona it was just ordinary shops and buildings.

Through my other travels, KL doesn't seem that photogenic. I found KL without the plastics of Singapore. It's got more of a real look when you travel just a bit from Petrona. it might be more suitable for street photog or documentary photog but that is not my style. That said, I find that Malaysia might be more about the beach areas or the wildlife and hiking activities. It would be great to have your inputs re: KL itself for photog.

Cheers.

KL is alright. Nothing to get all worked up about nor is it dull. I find the cultural diversity great but, at the same time, it didn't strike me with any particular personality or lasting impression. Maybe I had too high an expectation but I ended up liking Malacca, Penang and Kota Bharu more. That said, I think you should spend more than two days there. Singapore, Bangkok and KL all should be done more than a couple days. The east coast is cheap beach paradise compared to west coast...

The Bird Park is well worth a visit. Ignore the cages and walk around the free flight areas. Get there early to be ahead of the school trips and other crowds.

The National Monument can be very photogenic if you are lucky to get a blue sky. Also the Tien Hou Chinese Temple is a good place for the temple itself and also the people, particularly if there happens to be a service when you are there. If you go out to the Royal Selangor pewter factory the tour is interesting and you are allowed to take pictures.

The hibiscus and orchid gardens at the Lake Gardens are also worth a visit, although the gardens in Singapore are better in my opinion. Lake Gardens also has a butterfly park that is well done.

Since last October you can go to the top floor of the Petronas Towers, not just the bridge. If you have not been there recently you may like to return. Book ahead though, there are a limited number of tickets sold and there are long queues.

Batu Caves?

Also, there is an oft-overlooked Chinese temple on the way up to Genting Highlands. There are many interesting subjects there and of course a view of KL from up the mountain. And the cool climate.

You didn't mention Penang. Hmmm, a great miss if I may say so. Perhaps for your next trip.
