charles_clark1
I have determined that the 5D body is no match for concrete when dropped from 6 feet. My 5D body was wrapped in one of the Domke wrap, placed in my daypack, and slung over my shoulder as I rushed to the bus. I missed my carrying arm when I slung my pack and watched in horror as the pack, with my camera inside, dropped to the concrete.
The LCD screen is non-functioning. I don't know yet what else is messed up. I am pretty sure it is not economically feasible to spend the money to repair the Mark I, as opposed to replacing my "classic" camera with something new.

jim_mcdonald3
Hi Charles
I'm so sorry to read of your accident. I'm unsure how much a used 5D1 would run in your part of the world but it's maybe an option perhaps? That was the route I took earlier this year and would hate to be without one. I hope that things photographic improve in the short term.
alwin_lai
What a great excuse for an upgrade! Heh! OK you can also get another 5d classic.
peter_j2
Sorry for your loss. You need to upgrade to the 5D Mark II or a 1Ds II and part with up to $2000 for the body only. Then there are the OEM extra batteries...
PuppyDigs
If you install a new LCD yourself it's less than a benjamin for the parts.
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
Marcus Ian
It would def. be worth it to send it off for an estimate before messing with it too much. I'd think Canon would still do repairs on the 5s, but there is no telling how much that'd cost without sending it in first.

I'd hate to speculate, but it might not be that bad...
pto189
My daughter dropped her camera bag and cracked and Xsi LCD Display. Three camera repair shops had quoted from $175 - $215 before I found this LCD repair shop. You can buy and install it yourself, or you can send your camera with a check of $6.99. They will install the LCD for you.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-EOS-5D-SLR-LCD-DISPLAY-SCREEN-MONTIOR-NEW-PART-/330509191592?pt=Digital_Camera_Accessories&hash=item4cf3e209a8
jerry_terry3
It's probably worth investigating further to see if there is any other damage or not; you would be surprised at what a camera can survive. Try taking some pictures and downloading them to a computer. This will tell you if it's only the screen or something more serious. Even if the camera seems non-functioning, it might be worthwhile to check with a repair shop for an estimate/recommendation before replacing it.
matthijs
Another vote for checking if it can be repaired.

You'd be amazed at what a camera can sustain. charles_clark1
I did a bit of inspection last night after work. The camera seems to work OK. The photos seem to be fine on the computer. I guess I'll send it off to Canon for inspection and repair. My fingers are crossed.
robert_edelman1
Having have the backs of not one but 2 5D cameras damaged, I figure it will cost in the vicinity of $400.00, plus or minus $75.00. Unless the camera has been used a lot, there is a good possibility that it will be cost effective to have it repaired. Good luck.
Mark Keefer
Ouch! Just read about your mishap. Best of luck getting it repaired quickly. I guess there are some things duct tape can't fix. Cheers, Mark
