If you do not want to delete those old D5000 images on that memory card, you cannot format that card on any DSLR, regardless of whether it is that original D5000, another D5000 or your D7000, etc.

I am not sure why you want to do that, but if that is indeed what you want, I suggest you should simply retire that card.

I've battled with a friend of mine about not leaving all his photos on the card forever, not wise, not efficient, certainly not a good idea to go between different kinds of cameras. As was said, SD cards are cheap. To keep the card working at it's best, it should be reformatted in the camera regularly. Also, in my experience, transferring the photos from the card to the computer is best done with a reader, not directly from the camera. And be sure you back up the computer. I have my photos on two different backups.

The OP stated he has made copies elsewhere in the original post. But I agree - 4GB SD cards can be had for as little as $7 CDN. Not sure why you would want to use it in another camera. A decent 8GB card is only $25.

I have an 8GB card in the camera and carry 2 extra 8GB cards. The only time I swap out is when I didn't get a chance to download them to my computer and plan on possibly filling a card that day. Being a hobbiest, the closest I've come is 360 shots (RAW +JPEG/Large Fine) at a karate tournament for my son. I think that was only about 5.5GB.
