Why are you a photographer?

Recommended Posts

Because I sold two photos to the City of Toronto on behalf of Mayor David Miller....Because I have had over twelve art exhibtions of my work...Because I enjoy interacting with people while doing portraits...Because I teach it...Fifteen years later, my husband made me come the realization that I've become one...And the idea suddenly became accepted in my mind. My whole life I just took photographs, exhibited them, sold them, breathed them...Never thought twice that it's my profession...I just love seeing the world...and sharing what I see made me a photographer.

I have a huge background in the arts, both music and graphic. I hold a degree in Fashion Design from F.I.T.

Photography is the fastest way to translate my ideas into something tangible, like a print. I treat the camera as a

paintbrush, it's just a tool to get my images frozen in time for all to enjoy. If I see a terrific sunset, it's just a click

away, instead of days of fussing with oils or pens. Incidentally, I "backed into" photography from motion picture.

Photography has never been "a way to express myself" or "an art" for me.

It was important enough to my farm girl mother to make a few beautiful prints in the late 30s. Edward Weston's work convinced me further, just a few prints and Daybook II. I'd never have pursued it if I'd cared about Ansel Adams, dozens of whose prints I experienced in the 60s. I did happen to get turned on to the work of Avedon and Bruce Davidson and Bill Brandt before the 70s were out, and I spent many 24hr marathons processing Ektachrome and duplicating slides back then.

It's in my blood, I guess. What are your red blood cells to you?

One of my very first pictures. I posted it in my other forum and I must post it here. This was taken with a Pentax, don't remember which model but I remember it had a pointer exposure meter inside the viewfinder. The year taken was probably 1984-85.
My blood tells me music and pretty much anything requires the use of emotion and intuition. I was always very emotional and I always followed my instinct, no matter what the "rules" were.

00XlSt-306681584.jpg.18fdf6e7640456cceeda1c50f12c36ef.jpg
