Hey there, I know that ring flashes reflex looks good on sunglasses but I have a question here, I noticed on some music videos
were filmed with a ring light and produced a very interesting refrex with the shape of a star, I wonder if they are using a Star Filter with a Ring Flash, I will post the youtube videos here and you tell me how they did it because I would like to do it on a photo shoot.
Look at the effects on the sunglasses it looks like a star:

The light is like a ring flash, but not flash. It most likely is something like that alien bee things as cutting out a die with the shapes is much less work than creating a special light with all the radial tubes, but certainly possible. I couldn't see the second link, not available in my country it said.

This effect was first made popular, to my knowledge, by Scavullo when he used the reflection of his umbrella in his subjects sun glasses (Zappa maybe? it was a long time ago!). Anyway, I have seen various permutations of the effect in car ads and other commercial uses.

Ring lights are not that big. To make a large catch light in eyes/sunglasses you will have to be very close, think wide angle lens shoved in your models face close. If you are okay with that then go for the ring flash and see what you can get. If not you need to make something larger. Search for pictures made with ring flashes and you can get an idea of the size of reflection that they produce when the photographer is close to the subject and further away.
You see the strip lights that look like fluorescent light tubes in the background within the first 10 seconds of the video, my guess is that they used a bunch of those. You could build something like that with fluorescent lights.
