Business License

<p>I live in California and was wondering if you need a business license for an online retouching business.<br>

Does anyone know? <br>

<p>Lori:<br /><br />You should talk to a local CPA and your state Department of Revenue/Taxation etc. I doubt that you'd need a license specifically for retouching (applying somehow that you're a licensed retoucher) but chances at pretty big that you'll need a sale tax permit and all that good stuff.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Plus you need to think about how you will structure your business. Are you paid by 1099 or by payroll. There are tax and business implications either way. Talk to a CPA.</p>

<p>Business licenses in California are a municipal matter. Check with your city hall if you live in an incorporated area to find out what their requirements are. The city response to a question like this is predictable, "Anyone running a business within our borders needs a license."</p>

<p>My city requires you to state the type of ownership for the business, its Federal Taxid and its resale license number on the business license application form.</p>

<p>In some states, business licenses are required at both the county and the city level, so check with your county too. </p>
