I had a similar problem with mine - not the grinding part but the stiffness in the zoom - right around 35mm where the barrel changes directions during the zoom motion. I sent it to Nikon in NY and the work order mentioned that they had to replace the helicoid.Whether the lens is still under warranty or not, I would definitely send it in, if for nothing else, just have them crack it open to take a look inside.

I agree with the previous two posts. It is not normal. My 24-70mm Nikon lens makes no grinding sound and has no "stiff point." When rotated my zoom is smooth during the whole rotation. Send it back to Nikon for service. If Nikon service refuses to service it then send a copy of the video to the Nikon corporation president in Japan. A panicked regional manager will call you to apologize and will send you a Nikon cap and shirt. Hey, it worked for me with some defective Nikon binoculars. The cap is so cool that when I walked into a camera store wearing it, even the manager asked how I got hold of the cap. He said they were impossible to obtain.

See if you can get the dealer who witnessed your lens vs. his new stock to write and sign a note to Nikon service giving his opinion that your lens needs repair. Also, you could have a dealer's repair department send it to Nikon(if you haven't already); sometimes, in marginal cases, Nikon is more likely to provide service if the item is shipped in by a dealer.

My 24-70mm f/2.8 sounds a bit like yours. When new it had a slight sound that sounded like grinding towards the wide end and was also a bit tight when zooming. Both "problems" disappeared after a couple of weeks. Now very smooth with no problems.

Regards,

Dear all of professional Nikon Users:
Thank you so much for the reply.
I contacted other Nikon center in Toronto.

This is the reply from them:

[Response (J.L.) 03/02/2010 09:07 AM
Dear Syo,
Thank you for your e-mail. However it's best to consult a live service advisor at our Richmond service centre. Unfortunately your video gives us very little indication about the problem. Hence we are unable to resolve your issue via e-mail communication.
Thank you for contacting Nikon Technical Support.
Nikon Online Technical Support]

I wondering why everyone could notice the problems from 720P video but not Nikon? did they really watch the video then reply or just trying to play dumb?
the worst thing is that Nikon Canada disable my account right after they reply my Email, I can't do followup anymore for another online questions (I can't sign in, and can't do "forget password" function from the Nikon Canada site using same Email)

I really hope someone who has friends or connection in Nikon Service center (worldwide) could help me to show them the video. for the "Second Opinion"

I will also go ahead contact Nikon Japan head office (CEO side) per Jose Perez suggestion to have them look at the video too and notice this issue.
I will also go ask my dealer sign a note to Nikon Service per Keith suggestion.

Thank you so much for everyone's advise and support, it's really helping me out.
I will keep update with this post.

=============================================================================
Dear Jose Angel:
These problems appeared one year later after I bought it from dealer.
there are none of these problems in first year, everything was very smooth along the whole travel like yours now. @_@

=============================================================================
Dear Leo:
I will keep trying this lens (which I am doing already, since I still need this lens for some of my project), and hoping both "problems" will disappear after couple of weeks for this $1899 CAN lens.
I was expecting better service from Nikon, not everything have to "try out yourself and wait for the luck" with this price I spent.
Best regards,
Syo

I`m afraid nobody want to get involved after looking your video because;
1. They are professional staff, and they shouldn`t give other than absolutely solid and based opinions, hence they refuse to admit anything without personally check your lens.
2. They don`t want to send an opinion to wherever the place without knowing you and/or your intentions.
I can understand it. I have to do the same in my own work.

If they are experienced in Nikon gear, they probably know what happens. If not, it could be the very first time even for them... I know some Nikon dealers here who sell a lot of gear and knows almost nothing about technical issues.

I`d try to be directly serviced by a Nikon repair center, if you can. The lens is clearly damaged, just ask for repair. At the same time, check if warranty is valid to cover this issue. That`s another issue...

When I received mine, my first thought was about the convenienece of avoiding any pressure over the front moving group (storage, transport, bumps, etc.). It seemed a bit delicate to me in comparison with other pro lenses.

Don`t know if it makes sense (in fact the lens is factory carried head down), but I almost never remove the hood from it... specially if I need to carry the camera resting over the lens into the bag. Certainly it`s not my most used lens but works like the first day. Just a thought.

Dear Jose Angel:
Thank you so much for your smart analysis, I couldn't agree with you more.
like you said, some Nikon dealers know nothing about technical issues.
and yes, I always put the hood on when I used and in the bag (hood reverse though)
I think I have to be more careful to use this lens.
I will keep trying to contact another Nikon repair center, and hoping it will be solved soon.
Dear Elliot:
thank you so much for your suggestion.
I will send it to NY if there really no other ways by the end.

I would call Nikon Canada again and insist on talking to a supervisor on this issue. Get the name of each person you talk to. If they still refuse to fix your lens, write a letter to the president of Nikon Canada. That will get their attention.

Doesn't Nikon Canada have three service centers: Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal? Do not send it to Nikon USA, in New York or Los Angeles.

Thank you so much for every professional Nikon User's advise and support!
Finally my lens got fix and been treat well from service manager. Now I can enjoy my lens again as before.
without everyone's support, I won't have the lens fix, thanks.
If you happen in Vancouver, Richmond, Canada... remember never find the person call Jodine at Nikon Richmond service, extremely bad customer service!

Once again, Thanks for every professional Nikon User! ^^
