Lost a girlfriend/need a lens

Thomas, the women are out there you just have to look for them. If their profile says they into photography as a hobby and she shows one or two photos, then she is really into photography. I ran across one that was on J-date 1 year ago. They are out there, but you have to be patient.

Everyone... I laughed so hard through all of your responses, it was very therapuetic. Thanks for all the input. It is good to know that other people deal with s*** like this too.

I want to respond to everyone, but my time is limited. It seems The Tamron is the leading contender for me right now. That focal range is where I narurally shoot and I desperately need something to fit the bill. I'll upgrade later after I complete this recovery program for people who spend money irrationally. Thanks for the support.

Richard, Richard.....

You say you lack the middle focals.. but you have the 50mm. That's all you need. Really. Forget about this all-western buy-all attitude, go shooting with your 50 alone, and maybe you'll also find a less sub-human girlfriend.

All the best

Sorry, I just reread your post not initially realizing that you have 2 cameras with different sized sensors. There is really nothing that you shouldn't be able to get with what you have already, perhaps if you showed us an example.

Your 17-40 covers ~27-64mm on the 50D which is almost all of what you are supposedly missing.

Regardless, you already have a 50mm in between which with some walking can get most of the necessary shots in the 40-70mm range. Not only that, but the 50mm on a 5D is a spectacular combination in and of itself, not to mention that you have 2 other L lenses covering a tonne of space in focal range.

You don't mention what you shoot specifically or have many examples on your profile, that would probably help people give you better recommendations if you do actually convince yourself that you need another lens.

As a Nikon D80 user this is the first Canon forum I've visited! It's Frat-boy Central in here! As an Aussie, this is a new experience for me. "Hey,man, picked up this babe on Sunset Blvd, check out this photo"..."Wow, she's awesome, dude, you oughta get a 5D mk2 for her!"..."Hell yeah! Wanna get a beer?"....ANYWAY, the Tamron 28-75 is great, but also consider the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. There is a new version now, more expensive though.

with a 70-200 2.8L, 50mm 1.8, and a 17-40 f4 L. Obviously I need the middle focal range and if I had the loot I'd be at B&H right now getting the 24-70 f2.8 L.
I desperately need something to fit the bill.

Not to be a wet blanket on all the fun running down the girlfriends or wanting to be supportive in a fellow photog need advice on gear but it sounds like you have every focal length covered, with L glass no less. Maybe I'm missing the obvious but I'm unclear on the basis of your desperation. What pictures could you not take with your current kit, especially since you have two bodies and the need to change lenses in not really an issue?
It's one thing to have an actual need and another to have an obsession about "filling the gaps". All the L glass in the world won't fill a hurting heart.

Mark Loader,
it's not a Frat-boy central it's a therapy session -
- my girlfriend leeeeeeft meeeeeeeee. Booo Hooo Hooo. i spent thousands of $ in the past year and want to spend moooooooooore, but she just didn't geeeeet me. Booo Hooo Hooo.
- here boy, here. be a man. go shopping and spend more. women are good for nothing. better smoke a cigar then have a girlfriend.
i'm kind of wondering what these guys' wifes/girlfriends would say if they saw what they're saying about women? what about the "woman's just a woman" who gave you birth? she had to be worth more then a cigar smoke? No?

in any case, Richard, like a couple of people already pointed out, from your original post, it's not entirely clear what gaps you're trying to fill. the 17-40 f4 L on 50d will cover you to the 70mm you already have. so maybe you're looking for something extra wide, like wider then 17mm?

Really? You have a 50mm lens. What's a zoom that covers 60mm going to do for you that a 10% crop (or taking three steps forward) won't do?

Sorry about your girlfriend, but if I'm less than supportive of your quest for a new lens it's because I went around the world several times and shot over 10,000 frames of Kodachrome with just a 24, 50, 105 and 300mm lens. This was back in the 70's, and all of the zoom lenses available then were crap, so I didn't have the options you have today. But I truly believe that many a shot has been missed while guys are fooling with their zoom control.

And remember, you've never really been rejected until you've been rejected by eHarmony.com!

Canon should start making lenses in different colors, black and white is quite boring. That way when the lady says "I need to buy new shoes that match this dress", or "I need a new pair of fucsia/salmon/papaya shoes to go out" you can get her the shoes and run to the store to pick up a aquablue 24-105 that matches with your lovely eyes!
