POW - 7/26/09

Congrats Maria and Matt! That second is a very nice shot of the new fella.

Thanks to everyone who had kind words about my pictures. "Grandpa's Boat" I saw in my mind even before I pulled out my camera, which I think is how real photographers do it. :) I was pleasently suprised on the trip with what a good job the F 24-50 zoom did - I had my DA 40 along but never pulled it out.

In other news - lots of great stuff in this weeks POW. What stood out for me:
Trevor's Blueberry Picking - YUM!
Camus - I love your shots! Do you line up a location and then wait for someone to come along? You must be quick on the draw.
Leo - the second of the building is great, especially large. The rippling reflection just makes it.
Peter - those are really neat wedding shots, very gritty. I am sure they loved them.
And Bob, those blues are amazing in all three shots.
(Even if I don't single them out, oshiva's contributions always blow me away. Some day I will learn to PP! although probably not that well.)
And JC I love your daughter shooting the ZX-M. How old is she?

00U3gF-159035584.jpg.956cf898495c2a73301ad5fb2ad52c77.jpg

Camus - Returning home is really cool. I'm curious if that was a set-up portrait, or if it just happened to happen in front of you. Oddly (to me), the wires don't ruin the photo. I typically hate wires in portraits/landscapes, but somehow, these wires really help to make it.

Camus - I love your shots! I've gotten into street photography, and most of it is simply walking about (in different parts of town that might be more/less busy or interesting or interestingly lit at different times of the day). My shots are prob 50% total spur of the moment time-and-place type ones, and 50% I see the photo or a possible photo and plan it more (like the Returning home shot). If I don't get the shot I want I'll stay in the same place for as long as it takes, or if the light then changes I'll come back another day at the right time to have it right.

The returning home shot is a unposed street shot. I saw the lines above the crest of the hill while I was near there during the day, and realised it was a spot where quite a few people crossed at say 5-6pm walking home from work in the city. So I went back a couple of times in the morning and evening to shoot it and to get the silhouette and the sky in the most effective composition.

The on the waterfront shot is another one where I'd seen the possibility of the photo, and took quite a few with different compositions and people around. Even though this is more 'planned' I still like how people can change it - this guy just came along in his suit and stood there looking out over the harbour in the wind. Before that I'd taken couples walking past, cyclists going past, but I found this one the most effective.

Do you other street-photographer types work like that?

Maria, CONGRATULATIONS! He is a cutie. I assumed when you hadn't been posting in a while that the time had arrived. As for having three, a friend of mine said when Ann and I had our third,"Well, you have to go zone now, no more man to man." You'll figure it out soon enough. Congrats again and keep posting pics of the little guy.

Great photos this week everyone!
Bob- Cadillac Mountain looks like it would make the Rockies jealous.
Justin- Awesome shot of an awesome dog.
ME- I dig Orange, a lot!
Markus- Mt Hohenkasten looks like nothing we have here in CO :-)
Peter- classy!
Robert- I keep coming back to the cemetery, there's just something about it.
Sigmar- Sparkly is an eye catcher! Didn't have my camera out for the 4th...
Dorus- Religion indeed...
Duane- Those k100 shots are SHARP! awesome!
Rose- I would have been horrible at the Fish shots, nice work!
Maria- congrats! They start off so small....

@Nick- She just turned 4 in May. She's been shooting quite a bit on her own for over a year now on our Oly p&s. I'm tempted to post some photos for her. She loves to take photos as much as I do. Her composition isn't bad either, though the horizon isn't always level, she sees things from a much different perspective down there. I think if I had a cable release she'd be doing a lot more self portraits too!
Her and I try to have a "date" evening on Mondays. On that day it was just her and I walking around the Crown Hill lake and taking pictures. She was very interested in what I could see. She's used to having the live view on the p&s and wanted to know what all the fuss was about that she couldn't see but I could through the viewfinder. I let her snap off a few frames too.

while stalking some green herons in a local swamp(no luck, getting decent shots of wildlife with the smc 500 4.5 is proving difficult, wish I had the budget for an autofocus long lens) I notice my faithful assistant has abandon me and is back on the road talking on the cell phone, so for revenge I took some shots of her( she hates her pic taken) just as well she refuses to wear camo, turns out to be about the most infocus shot I have had in days, and no motion blur either!

I finally hae connectivity! I'm on the Miramichi River in New Brunswick for some salmon fishing (I've encountered two but landed none.) Here are two shots from the road. Forgive the crude netbook PP-- I'll tidy them up when I get home.

This was taken with the DA 55-300mm in a town with an unpronouncable and unspellable name on the Northumberland coast.

00U41B-159269684.jpg.c57c6b2ca6e29e0c2282d2271499b755.jpg

Maria, you popped him out already? Boy does time really fly! I could swear you just told us you were pregnant only a month... maybe 2 ago.
Anyway, he's extremely cute, and thankfully under the sign of the crab - so he'll be really even tempered and sweet ... (I'm describing myself here.... ) :) - not crabby at all as the 'symbol would suggest.
He may have the occasional mood swings when the moon is full - He'll need extra hugs and kisses then... I'm sure you can handle it. :)
