joseph_wisniewski Posted July 7, 2009 Share Posted July 7, 2009 <p>Are you buying a domain name that someone else already owns, or one that no one has registered?</p> <p>For an existing domain name, you're at the mercy of the seller, and they may do a one-time or a yearly deal.</p> <p>For a new, original name, you regsister it with an outfit called a "register", like the one that "other" Joseph mentioned for a very low fee, anywhere from $3-10/year. Domain names are "portable", if you can prove you own it, you can move it to a different register for minimal cost, so no one pulls a switch like jacking your yearly regsitration to $1000/year.</p> <p>There are scam outfits that will attempt to get you to move your domain to their register, at some cost of $50-100/year, and they send out email and regular mail that look a lot like renewal notices. Sanford Posted July 12, 2009 Author Share Posted July 12, 2009 <p>I finally went with DoDady to purchase my domain name and Mobileme to host it, at least until the 60 day free trial expires and then I may got to Godaddy for everything. GD has excellent customer service but they are high pressure salesmen and push you to purchase add-ons you don't need or want. Mobileme is buggy, unreliable, too expensive, and customer service leaves a lot to be desired.</p> Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I pay them $9.95/month for web hosting, payable one year in advance and the domain registration and up to 1,000 mailboxes are included.
