peter_j2
I just bought an EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens today. Can you recommend either a plastic or rubber third party lenshood for me? The Canon hood is around $60 at my local photo stores. Thanks.
mendel_leisk
The Canon hood (ES-71 II) is only $27 through B&H. I'f you're getting other items the shipping wouldn't be much. That lens is fairly deeply recessed though, almost a built-in hood, more so with a UV filter on the front. I've got that combo but prefer to leave the hood at home, for a more compact kit. derrickdehaan
Heres a link to an assortment of options. Thats one thing that chaps my hind end about Canon glass, no hoods included. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=canon+50mm+hood

peter_j2
The Canon OEM looks good from Amazon. It's more than half of what I would pay at my neighbourhood store. Thanks guys.
stephenwagnerphoto.com
I have one of the cheap ones sold on Ebay. Have to say that for the price, it's pretty good. I can tell it's not Canon, but the quality is still more than good enough for the money I saved.
peter_j2
Stephen: I ordered an OEM hood from a Kowloon based ebay seller yesterday. With the shipping costs, I am still going to be saving $20. Hunting down cheap little accessories like this can make photo life interesting to say the least. alan_myers
Your local store is out of their fricking minds! They are vastly overcharging for that Canon hood. Yeah, I was going to mention the cheap knock offs on eBay, too. I don't happen to have one (have the Canon OEM one for my 50/1.4... it came with the lens when I bought it used) but they seem a good option and at least they use the bayonet mount and reverse for storage. You might also be able to find one a used one. eBay is one place to look, of course. I am lucky to have a local camera store that sells used equipment, including hoods of all types for a flat $3 to $5 apiece. I've picked up more than a few extras there when they happened to have them. A local, monthly camera fair is another really good place to pick up inexpensive accessories like that, if they happen to have what I need. Haven't seen a lot of hoods for current Canon lenses at either place, though, I must admit. You could use a simple, generic 58mm screw in hood. I'd recommend a rigid metal or plastic one, though, instead of the collapsible rubber type (they seem to collapse at the worst possible times). The only hassles are having to screw it in and it won't reverse on the lens for convenient storage like the bayonet fit hood will. Hey, if you want to always get a hood with your Canon lenses, stick with L-Series. They all come with their respective hoods included at "no additional cost". ;-)
peter_j2
Thanks Alan. Here, the odd photo store and three times a year photo flea market WILL have the item I will unknowingly need in the future. It is when the item is needed and that is when these places do not have it! Thank goodness for ebay.
