william_grimsley
I was approached to shoot some college team photos. 100 or so mug shots and 4 team shots. I have no idea what to charge for this type of work and was wondering if anyone out there had experience with this? I was unsure if I should charge them an hourly rate or per photo. I usually shoot weddings, engagements, and seniors...but I have packages for all of this.
daverhaas
William - Depends on who is buying them... If you are just shooting for the college then I'd charge an hourly rate. If you plan on or they have a history of selling packages to the players (god knows why) then I'd put together some basic packages - say 5 - 10 options (8x10, 5x7, team, individual, etc...). My guess is that since these are college kids, most won't be buying photos for themselves or parents (they've got all those already), So I'd go option 1 - flat hourly rate and bump it to include delivery of images on a cd to the college. william_grimsley
Dave. Thanks for the insight. I really appreciate it. I spoke with the media director at the college and he said most do not purchase packages, so I am thinking I will just go with the hourly rate. What is an average hourly rate for this sort of shooting? I usually charge for packages in the type of photography I normally do.
ctbruce
I shot yearbook photos for 2 high schools and a NCAA III college. I provide team photos as well as action candid photos of the athletes. I than provide a cd of the images to the school for use in the yearbooks. I normally charge $75 an hour plus mileage @ $.30 a mile. That is for each sport or event I cover so depending on the number of sports and the coverage they want it works out very well for both the school and myself. Hope this helps. daverhaas
Bruce's hourly rate is close to what I charge, but the mileage is low...I'd suggest going up to 45 or 50 cents per mile, depending on if gas is below or above $4.00 a gallon. Based on what the AD told you, hourly is the way to go. Dave
