I am trying to create a portfolio but every image i try to upload comes back saying it's too large or i don't have

enough space. If I sign up for a membership can I upload any file no matter the size? I don't know how to re-size my

pictures. Does the size that's too large refer to KB size or something else?

Since photo.net is for displaying photos, not for file storage of oversized photos, it is necessary to prepare most digital photos for web display.

For web display size can refer to two things:

1. Dimensions visible on screen.

2. File size in terms of storage space.

Also, only photos in standard JPEG format should be uploaded. Full resolution raw files or photos in TIFF, BMP or other formats should not be uploaded and probably won't be viewed by many people.

A photo seldom needs to be larger than can be viewed on a typical monitor. For a typical horizontal orientation ("landscape") photo, 800x600 pixels is a reasonable size.

File size in kilobytes depends on the photo. Some photos contain more data than others and cannot be compressed too much without losing quality. So a reasonable size for one 800x600 might be 300 kb while another might be compressed to less than 100 kb and still look good.

Almost any photo editing software can resize photos in dimensions and file size. The process depends on your software and your familiarity with that software. Can you describe the types of photos you want to upload (camera, type of scanner if using film, etc.) and your software?

As far as the gallery is concerned, images currently need to be smaller than 1500 pix on the longest side and less than 3MB.

This is to reduce server load from people who were uploading giant pictures

without resizing at all. There is no reason to upload an image for web

display that is over 1500 pix. I upload my photo.net gallery images at

750pix on the longest side.

I don't have photo editing software-other than what is in my computer- I think windows photofix oe something. I use a Canon 40D-cf card and I shoot on jpeg/large. I checked out the sizes and they range from 400 kb to 4mb's. Also anywhere from 3800x2500 to 900x700.

I figured out how to make the screen size smaller however there is no option to make the file size smaller. I read that photos should not be more than 100 kb in file size-is that right? Most of my pics are like 3-4mb's. Anyway- thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.
