"No Photo id" error message when updating an existing image.

I am trying to update the details pertaining to the following

image: http://www.photo.net/photo/654632 and continually get

a "No Photo Id" error message.

I did a search the forum and found other references to the problem when doing

image uploads. None of which appeared to be solved except by removing the

Technical Details. Also, found a comment by Brian Mottershead that the

problem surfaces often but not ever able to be reproduced since the

problematic text in the Technical Details attribute is not available.

Well, at this point the problem is reproducible since the image is an existing

image with the apparent problematic text still there. Just open the image for

editing, try to save it, and you get the ?No Photo Id? error, time and time again!

Hopefully this will help someone solve the problem, I would like to update this

image and not remove the Technical Detail. Thanks for any help.

Hello, Bill. I just tried it on one of my own images and it worked. It must be something

particular to your image data. I will try to take a look at it this weekend. In the

meantime, can you try something for me: open the image to edit the technical data, cut

your current text out (save it somewhere), save the image data, then try to open it up

again and paste the saved text back into it. If you do this, let me know what happens.

Otherwise, I will let you know what I find.

Jin,

Could not get to this before today, was away. Took a little different approach than you wanted, but seem to have found the problem. What I did was copy the problematic text from the problematic image http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo-edit?photo_id=654632 to a text file on my home machine and copied it from there to another image. Tried to save that image and it would not allow me.

So I did a binary thing on the text copying smaller and smaller parts until I finally got something that would allow me to save the image. What I found was characters that were preceded with ?? like ??? and ???. I removed the ?? and it still did not work. I then deleted and retyped the ? - ? (dashes) and ? ? ? (single quotes) and it worked.

Don?t know how the ?? characters got inserted, I never did it. Possibly some update process you guys went through at one time. Been a long time since I updated the problematic member.

I?ve updated the problematic image and everything seems OK now. Don?t know what was different between the original ?-? (dashes) and ? ? ? (single quotes) than the ones I retyped but that seems to be what fixed things.

Hi, Bill. Yes, we've been having some issues with strange character sets for a while,

I've been trying to fix them as we come to them, but it's difficult to find the root

causes. Can I ask you a few questions on how you're entering text? It would help

me to replicate and then fix the problem.

When you originally entered the technical details, did you do so by typing directly

into the text box? Or did you use another program, and cut and paste the text? If so,

what was that other program (Microsoft Word, or something else)? What was the

program you used to cut and paste the text into yesterday?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Yesterday I was using MS Word 97 to cut and paste from and to. The origuinal text I was having problems with was entered years ago, so don't know what I was using then for that particular image. But, it worked then and something since then has changed.

But it is at nice to know that changing and/or eliminating special characters seems to help. :-)
