the polaroid man
Hello all,I looked at this site: http://www.davidbalhuizen.com and I am curious how these color effects are achieved.I know he shoots digital. I can't even put my finger on the colors...Are they too green? Too magenta? Can some of you help me out?
JeffOwen
My guess is to highlight the area you want to keep at normal colour, invert the selection and desaturate slightly.
JeffOwen
I did this conversion using Image-Adjustments-Hue and Saturation in PhotoShop.

the polaroid man
it's not just desaturation...it's something with the colortone
the polaroid man
hi Jeff, Thanks for thinking with me, but I think you are on the 'wrong' track. It's far more subbtle than that. It has something to do with a slight touch of green, of magenta , I don't know
ronald_moravec1
The images are desaturated, contrast lowered, lightened, and some have a green color cast. He may had desaturated blue and red channels more than the green.
the polaroid man
how do you desaturate only those 2 channels? (apart from the tints in colortone/saturation)
shambrick007
Looks like film to me.

Uhooru
Well, if they're digital raw files, you can change the white balance and you can then you can play w/desaturate individual colors, there's lots of ways to do it. In fact, if you have lightroom, there's a preset that almost does exactly what you have here:) You just have to then go in and modify that. anna_nielsen
once i saw a guy doing images like this and i remember him assigning adobe1998 profile to aim profile to get this light/white tones. Have a look at this thread at retouch pro. says how its done. AIM color space - Gamma 1.00 [Archive] - Photo Retouching - RetouchPRO-
anna_nielsen
Pull the original over on top of the one with the assigned aim profile and paint back original color on a layer mask. And ofcourse you need the right shots wich i think is a importat issue.
anna_nielsen
hmm or maybe its not the way its done :(
bernardwest
It looks like he is selectively desaturating one, two or all colour channels. The other obvious thing to see in these images is that there is no true white point. The brightest highlights are a shade of gray. Pull the right slider towards the middle a bit in the 'output' control in levels.
raybrizzi
Green and magenta? Have you ever worked with LAB color? It does things with colors that you can't do with rgb and cmyk.
eric stolk
how do you desaturate 1 colour channel????
catherine_jones1
Try shooting in raw and decreasing the 'vibrance' of the image in your raw editing software. I've been mucking around with this and just this simple step gets you pretty close to the feel/colorspace of these images.
philip_sokolowski
I can see a hint of maybe a white painted layer with a low opacity level. He gets away from it in series 5 but some of the early series have that look.
bernardwest
how do you desaturate 1 colour channel????

Simple. Open levels, select a colour channel, use the middle slider to darken (desaturate).
