Continue File Numbering from 10D to 40D

Please excuse me if this has been asked before but I am running out of time as

Christmas is nearly here and I need to get this sorted out before hand.

I have just purchased a 40D which is replacing a 10D and I need to ensure that

the file numbering on the 40D continues from where the 10D left off.

I would appreciate any replies a.s.a.p.

Thank you in anticipation and a Merry Christmas to all.

You likely have a big investment in your current naming system (leaving the names unchanged), and the responses already given are accordingly your best bet, but just for discussion:

I decided early on to batch rename my files. I wait till I have a card filled, take them off via a card reader, and immediately rename the lot, following a pattern of:

Camera Name_card number-frame number

So for the the fifth frame of the third card full, shot with my 5D, I rename to:

Canon5D_003-005

There are a few programs that can do this. Typically, you start by sorting the target files by name (by date will work as well), and then tell the program to batch rename via a pattern like:

Canon5D_003-%%%

This is the method with ACDSee's rename function, which I use, but there are quite a few others that can do the same thing: IrfanView, Adobe Bridge, and various dedicated file renaming programs.

Once caveat: test the programs out on copies first, ensure there is a "warn on overwrite" option, and use it.

Even Windows Explorer has a rudimentary batch rename, but I believe it's more dangerous than useful ;)

"I need to ensure that the file numbering on the 40D continues from where the 10D left off."

Most folks wanta avoid this and complain when it happens! But, yep, just stick that old card

in there and you'll be in like flint.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

I batch rename always as part of taking the files off the reader. Using Adobe Bridge, in one batch fetch command from the reader I rename, convert to DNG, embed copyright notice (EXIF data). These are then my 'RAWs' on disk and the card is free to be reused.

Graham,

You formatted them in-camera or in your computer?

If you still have the 10D, just put one card in the camera and fire one frame. If you don't, /and/ you formatted the cards in your computer then you'll just have to deal with new filenames and batch renaming.

If you just formatted the cards in-camera, then the file naming doesn't actually go away and the 40D will pick up where the 10D left off.

I have now formatted a card in my camera, taken a shot and then placed the card in my PC's card reader and renamed the file to 7041.

I then put the card back into the camera and took another shot this file number was, as I had hoped, 7042 but the folder started at 100 so the new file number that I had created was now......100_7042.

I had expected the folder number to have increased by 1 for every 100 shots taken. I did also try changing the folder number but for some reason it was not having it. Thank you to all who have, or will, contribute an answer or suggestion. Once again Merry Christmas.

We have four digital cameras in the house, including my 10D and 40D.

We use Breeze Systems Downloader Pro which can be configured to place the files in dated folders which, in turn, are grouped into one folder for each camera. For example, ...

D:\10D\2007-12-20\

D:\10D\2007-12-21\

D:\40D\2007-12-22\

D:\A95\2007-12-24\

Downloader Pro can also rename the files to a format of your choosing and include the camera name too.

I have the rebel xti and the software for selective downloading allows for file renaming as it transfers files. I use the date the picture was taken with a description of the event and a sequential number as the file name. FOr example 20071225_X-MAS_001. This makes it realy hard to duplicate file names.
