Walter Talbot Berlin Folding Camera

Walter Talbot was a camera dealer in Berlin. A common practice at the time was to put the dealer name on the side or back of the camera.

I have a Rollei with a Walter Talbot Berlin label on it. He might have had his own line of cameras but if this was a common plate camera it probably would have made by one of the many folding plate manufacturers in Germany in the 20's and 30's.

I used to have a Romain Talbot plate camera. He first produced magic lanterns in the 1850s - 1870s, originally in France then in Germany. The business set-up in Berlin became world-famous, and was taken over by his two sons, neither of which was called Walter, I think. Maybe Walter was a bit later on? Maybe nothing to do with this family, I don't know! They also produced the Ertee camera (from the founders initials, R & T).

Neil.

I found a single line reference about the dealership in german: "Talbot, Walter, vormals (=formerly) Romain Talbots" from the 1920s. Romain Talbot's death was reported in the 1909 edition of the British Journal of Photography Almanac, where he was described as "...the oldest member of the photographic trade in Germany..."

So the two are linked, but by this time Talbot's must have been a large, important multi-dealership: there are scattered references to Rolleiflexes, Agfas, etc, bearing the Walter Talbot mark. So - knowing the dealership will tell you nothing about the camera! Like Patric says, a photo of said camera might help.

Regards,

Neil.
