taylor_cole
I just bought a Canon Rebel XT with the Canon 17-55 lens. I want to use my camera for both helmet mounted BASE jumping and non-helmet mounted BASE jumping. I was wondering if anyone would mind giving me some settings that may work best for twilight conditions or sunny conditions (both into and away from the sun)? I have been practicing with the camera at the lake, but haven't yet taken it jumping. The action is very fast and I wouldn't want to risk my camera if all I'm going to do is get blurry shots. I will be willing to post a photo every week or two of my progress if anyone is interested in following along. The photos mught stink, but the action will be good. :) I enjoy the site.... Thanks!! mark newcombe www.mcnphoto
Cool Taylor happy to help, have you worked out how to mount and fire the camera from your helmet? It's pretty easy to rigg up we used to do it when I used to skydive in the olden days, let me know if you need help with that i'll see if i can find a picture of my old set up and send it to you. We had screw in cable releases and motor drives back then. An old f90x used to work well if you are worried about your digi pick one up from ebay with a 50mm for peanuts find some press 800 and go crazy. As for settings you'll need to set the camera on EV (canon speak i think)for the twilight stuff and open the app up, you may also have to bump up the iso to get at least 500th shutter speed, we used to use fuji press 800 in the old days I don't know about your canon at iso800 it's probably ok. For bright sunny conditions set the camera to TV 500th and let it take care of the rest if you find the pic's blurry try taking the speed up. Post the results so we can trouble shot for you as you progress. You can buy eye targets that attach to the view finder to help with aim, they work ok for skydiving but base probably requires far more concentration so it may be a hinderance. I always wanted to BASE but I was always on the heavey side. There is a great Aussie movie out called BASE CLIMB it's a few years old now but still pretty cool all the same. Let us know how you go.
