mick_kaufman1
I am using capture one pro and shoot on flash cards. Recently I attempted to tether to my studio computer on my 5d to my Mac. The problem is that the delay before the photo comes up on the monitor is too long. Sometimes 30 seconds, is this because its a usb cord and not firewire? I have seen the Mark 3 come up on a screen almost immediately. Can I plug a usb into a firewire cord for faster download, anyway to do this or is it bad for the camera? eugene_scherba
Tethering is almost instantaneous from my 20D to my Mac Pro via USB. 5D files are slightly bigger, but downloading them shouldn't take 30 seconds. (1) Make sure your Mac supports USB 2.0. (2) Update your Canon EOS Utility.
eugene_scherba
BTW, I should have mentioned that I use tethered 20D in RAW mode only...
elliot1
There is no Firewire port on the 5D. USB 2.0 is about as fast as Firewire.
marco_hidalgo
Hi Mick, my 20D transfers the image almost instantly, no problems at all. But I have a different problem with my 5D. I can do remote shooting with the 20D but as soon as I try with my 5D, the Canon software seems to freeze. A window opens saying the camera is busy and I should clear the window. Anyone has an idea of what can be wrong with my software? I am using the latest EOS Utility 2.3.0 as I just updated it, thinking the previous one was not good for the 5D. I am using Leopard 10.5.1 , do you guys think that might be the problem?
robin_sibson1
See Mark U's post drawing attention to a new version of EOS Utility for the Mac.
ellis_vener_photography
"There is no Firewire port on the 5D. USB 2.0 is about as fast as Firewire." A provably false contention on my computer.
ellis_vener_photography
To Mick Kaufman, I don't use Capture One or a 5D but Martin Evening recently wrote up his method for using a 1Ds Mark 3, Canon s recently updated EOS Utility and Lightroom for tethered shooting with an iMac. One of the keys to his success with thus which I have tried successfully with a 1Ds Mark 2 and a friend has also used successfully with a 5D and a Mac Pro (both his machine and my machine are Core 2 Duo machines and are running OS X 10.4.11) is to start with Lightroom and the EOS Utility off. Connect the camera to the computer, then turn on EOS Utility, and then turn on Lightroom. You also need to set up the EOS Utility to download the photos to a folder on your desktop that you tell Lightroom to watch. Martin's more extensive notes can be found at http://www.lightroom-news.com Also how much RAM do you have installed nad do you have any other programs running during your tethered sessions? Both of these factors might have something to do with your speed fall off
gaetano catelli
can i tether my 5D to my PC? if so, do i need special software?
dave404
Canon ships a basic software package with the camera and the cable (EOS capture). You probably will need an exension USB cable so that you are not limited to the short length of the cable it comes with. The Breeze systems DLSR pro (which has a 30 day demo)is better than the canon software.
gaetano catelli
looks good -- thanks, David.
gaetano catelli
BUT, the DSLR Remote Pro website reads, in part: "Display live images on the PC screen (Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III or Canon EOS 40D only)"
ref: http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemotePro/index.htm
