I've recently subscribed to Focusmag after having bought a copy at a local newsstand. Does anybody

know this publication?

Any enlightening remarks or opinions?

If you understand what it really is, and it pleases you then enjoy and don't worry.

It is a vehicle for self-publicizing, but not the same as self-publishing (vanity press) because the work has to be accepted under certain editorial criteria.

If you have a few thousand and some good pictures, you might be able to get in there, too.

Frankly, it's good to know that the particular domain is self enclosed. I don't want it leaking out into the culture of real photography.

Actually, that's about 1/3 of the magazine. The rest of the magazine is editorial that covers the latest news, trends and information on collecting fine art photography. For instance in our last issue, we had a 2006 Year in Review interview with Stephen Perloff, we interviewed the curator of Madrid's most prestigious art museum, we interviewed an emerging photographer Nicholas Trofimuk, we did a very important retrspective on Ruth Bernhard that was published two weeks after her death, we interviewed Lauren Greenfield, previewed an upcoming exhibition of the f/64 group at The Scott Nichols Gallery, reviewed over 20 different exhibitions that took place in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, London, Madrid, Paris and Rome, analyzed the current trend behind collecting fine art photography books, gave autumn auction results, previewed upcoming trends in collecting photography for 2007, profiled vintage photographer Fredrick H. Evans, listed over a dozen upcoming notable exhibitions taking place all over the US in January and February and profiled photographer Brett Weston. That took up almost 70 pages of 176 page magazine. We have a section where photographers who meet our standards can advertise their photography, but that's not what the magazine is about, nor is it the central focus of what we're about. If you're going to submit a fact, please have accurate information.

Oh and we have much, much less expensive rates than "a few thousand dollars."

It has good portfolios, discussions about collecting, and it's only about $6 US at the

newstand. I like it because it has plenty of photos without all those overly critical " what

not to shoot" articles you see in almost every photo mag today.
