EOS 1Ds vs. EOS 5D

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a good digital camera from which I can make

16"x24" without substantial resolution manipulation. I figured about

12 megapixels should handle this just fine. The new 5D is

attractive, but appears to be underfeatured when compared to the EOS

1Ds. The 5D is made with the most recent technology advances, but

the 1Ds is 3-year old technology - 2 generations whenever speaking

in terms of silicon products. Can anyone provide me with concrete

information on how the EOS 1Ds fares against the 5D? I really

appreciate any information you can offer, especially first hand

accounts. Thanks!

Don't believe anything anyone says about any camera here on photo.net, we are all brand fanatics. And most of what people say will be hear-say from real reviews you can read yourself. :)

Don't put too much into age. With this kind of product, good chance they made a great product 3 years ago ago and spent the time since trying to figure out how to make it cheaper without losing too much quality.

My 2 cents from reading reviews? It's good enough, but suffers from chromatic aberations and edge softness, especialy when using wide angles. (true for 1Ds too) Not as bullet proof, feels like a 20D. Not very good value, those expecting an "EOS 3D" are dissapointed.

Unless you already have lots of expensive Canon glass, the D2X is a good alternative. Solid build, better features and none of the image quality problems.

My dealer said the 5D is better than the 1Ds becos its updated with the edge lenses abberation? Or something like that.

But he still prefers a D2x over them both (serious).

He says if you go for FF you should already have a load of L series lenses.

I don't have both a 5D and a 1Ds, I can't afford either. :-D

How do you feel the 5D is "underfeatured" compared to the 1Ds?

Unless you need the weathersealing that the 1Ds has, go for the 5D. Much newer and more advanced sensor and electronics.
