jonathan_wilson1
I ask people to rate AND critique my photos in the Photo Critique forum. I only post my "better" shots there. I am frustrated by the low marks I receive. I am not looking for 7's, but if someone rates my picture a 3 I ask them to please give a reason so I can learn. Here is my suggestion If someone rates a 3 or below can the forum mandate and explanation before the low score gets applied?
jonathan_wilson1
I just looked at my own ratings..and yes I have been guilty of this myself.(SHAME on me) However if I had to place a comment for the 3 then I would have... Not trying to stir the pot, if this is an old subject thats been beaten so many times in the past, then Im sorry.
yann_r.
Jonathan, I'm afraid there's only one rule: give to receive. More you'll write honest and constructive critiques, more you'll receive feedback.
Ratings are only numbers to allow photo.net system to build the TRP pages.
hatley
Just blow off the ratings. Between the "I only give 6/6s across the board" types and the "machine gun" sort of rating recent photos, they don't ever tell ya much. I state it like this because if lets say there were a cutoff at 3/3 to force a comment, people would just rate 4/4 as their lowest, etc. And really, photos that are rated 6/6 and 7/7 need just as much of a comment to divine why they like it, if you tie much more than a passing importance to the ratings. I've tried removing an image that got a a slew of 3s and 4s, resubmitted it a couple months later and it got 6s instead (I put borders on a segment of photos), and saw it go the opposite way. But I will say this - the recent photos you've submitted for critique would probably score higher if they had more contrast, saturation, and unsharp mask applied. Flowers especially score better if they have as much of all three of those as they will stand before losing detail or going grainy, they catch the eye better that way for one. Whether or not they are as pleasing to you as to the whim of ratings is another thing =) Cheers.
tholte
Jonathan, don't give up yet, you have only been around a few months. Viewing your images I would venture to guess that you are getting low rates because of your subject matter - cats, kids and flowers. Those three subjects are very difficult to do well in as far as ratings go unless done extremely well. Try some different things, do some experimenting and don't let low rates get you down. darrell_m
Someone pointed out to me once that if comments were obligatory for 3/3's you'd get 'It really sucks, dude' as well as the rating. I also heard of a guy giving out 3/3's on photos because they were B/W. Jonathon, don't take the ratings to heart.
ilkka_nissila
3 is intended to be just below average for a photo.net gallery shot. You must realize that 50% of images on photo.net are below average according to this definition. A 3 is not bad.
yann_r.
In order to appreciate the right value of 3s ratings, it could be fine (more logical) to see the 1s and 2s ratings back.
bens
Regardless of the merits of your suggestion, the site's management has indicated no interest in such proposals for a very long time. So here's a suggestion -- try participating in Five, its a page for people interested in critiquing photographs, and has a long list of people who share that interest. Perhaps by commenting on their photos you will have a reasonably good chance of receiving comments on your own work in return.
giorgio.luciano
Thanks to Ben for the link. Me too lately a bit sad of receiving rates from "voting machine" witout having any comment. I'm for a mandatory comment when giving rating or at least for an obligatory free subscription before voting.. but that seems not to be the spirit of photo.net jojo
davidmccracken
When you go to 'Rate Photos' from the 'Gallery' drop down menu, which is the anonymous way the site prefers, and all the people contributing to it hate, the request from the photogrpher cannot be seen. That said, it wouldn't matter.... a rating means nothing without a comment and that is why I refuse to rate anonymously.
ctgorczyca
Photo net should take that rate photos out of the drop down menu. Photos should be rated with your name just like critiques
