boughey
Is it possible to get a honey comb grid attachement for a shoe flash? Does such a product exist. I would use it exactly as I would on an AC stdio flash unit, i.e. to enable me to direct light to a specific section of a background/subject etc. I've seen the snoots at Lumiquest but they give too hard an edge. Any ideas?
ellis_vener_photography
I 've used grids that were designed for Novatron snoots. I had to modify them o fit Vivitar 283 & Nikon Speedllights. If you already have standard 7 inch grids for your studio lights you had just put them in front of your small flash unit.
boughey
Thanks very much Ellis, I'll give it a go.
mab
Another option you might want to play with, especially if you find positioning a 7 inch grid to cumbersome, is one of those fresnel lenses used for "long distance" flash (usually in nature photography). They reduce the angle of coverage significantly when used close up, although not as sharply as a snoot or grid. I believe Kirk Enterprises sells one. twmeyer
Cinefoil and gaffers tape... t (Lumiquest actually makes a snoot for shoe mount flash)

acearle
Errr...and from the lunatic fringe...I've played around with tinfoil on an SB800 (yep, reflective)...interesting things happen as the light bounces all over the place near the opening, but it might be worth a shot...soft edges :-)... gerard
Adrian,
I haven't seen a commercial honeycomb attachment. That's why I did one myself.
The recipe is quite easy: just get a box of black straws, cut enough in small pieces (2-5 cm depending on the wide/narrow beam you want) and glue them together. I did a cardboard mold arround my 550EX and started from there. I finished it off with a 5cm thick elastic band around that's only half glued to the cardboard, sothat the other half works as attachment to the flash.
Have fun,

Gerard.

boughey
Ingenious Gerard. This is exactly what I've been looking for...and at the right price too. Many thanks!
gerard
Adrian, I posted the answer as a new thread to facilitate a search in the future. There you can also see a detail shot of the attachment itselft. I hope it helps, regards, Gerard.
