NYC Hotel

Looking for a modest-priced hotel in NYC. Several times in the past a few people here have recommended

a particular low-priced hotel. Not fancy, but clean. Don't think it was in midtown, maybe chelsea?

Anyone remember? Know it's a broad question...

The Gershwin ranges from $40-$350/night depending on whether you take a dorm cot or a real room.

The Carlton Arms, a couple of blocks away, is known for murals painted on virtually every surfacew of the hotel. Prices depend on whether you have a private or shared bathroom, but if you're by yourself it's around $70-$90/night, with better rates for multiple people and weekly stays.

I think you might be thinking of the Chelsea Lodge. It was mentioned a bunch when we were doing those NYC 24 hr things a couple years back.

But, then there is the "notorious" Hotel Chelsea, famous for some of it's past patrons. I think it's cleaned up since then, but I have never stayed there.

Actually, never stayed at the Chelsea Lodge either....was always booked up when I wanted to stay, it a small place with only a couple dozen rooms.

I've stayed at the Union Square Hotel...14th Street around 3rd Ave......nice, but the prices have gone up past what I think the room is worth. Also, the Pickwick Arms.....52nd Street between 2nd and 3rd Aves.....but again, price has gone up past what I think the room is worth. However, having said that, both are clean and quiet.

Brad,

I used to live in the Carlton Arms (when it was under $25 a night!). Glad to see it has stayed interesting.

Used to be there was no shortage of cheap hotels (that weren't total flops) but prices have gone way up. I lived in Hotel 17 when it was a dive (read under $10 night!), it seems to be quite hip now. Prices are reasonable.

I would recommend Hotel Deauville...rooms are basic, safe and clean, and the staff definately has character (or maybe I should say ARE characters), and they get some interesting people (jazz musicians, etc) staying there.

You can hardly go wrong in the Murray Hill neighborhood. It's mostly residential, located in midtown Manhatten, but without upscale Manhatten prices. When I lived in Baltimore I would trek up to NYC occasionally for a few days. Mostly stayed in the Bedford Hotel, a smallish place with maybe 125-135 rooms or so. Most rooms come with a kitchenette, so you can save on food (and spend it on film instead). Rates are $165-$195 a night.

We went up last year for a medical convention, one of my staff got us rooms at a really fancy hotel for less than half their usual rate, on priceline.com. I don't know how it works but I think you put in an area of town you want to stay in and the price you want to pay and see if you get a taker.

Try the Larchmont Hotel on West 11th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Rates as low as $80 on weeknights, $99 on weekends. Quiet residential block with a good 24-hour bistro at the corner. Midway between Midtown to the north and SoHo/Tribeca/Downtown to the south.

You might also look into the Washington Square Hotel. I don't know the rates but it's popular with European tourists and is almost certainly cheaper than comparable lodging in Midtown.
