Is photo.net old looking?

Instead of only allowing the sorting of pages of threads by starting date, offer the option of sorting by date of most recent post.<

Kai Griffin , mar 08, 2005; 04:48 p.m.

>I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, but I think the feature you're looking for already exists... just click the "New Answers" link at the top of the page, and you'll get the threads ordered by the most recent replies. So, since I just added to this thread, it will appear at the top of the New Answers list (at least for a minute or two...)<

Kai,

Excellent! Thanks for pointing that out!

Regards,

Peter Wilson

"Despite all those other photo sites, folks seem to stick here. Even though they complain all the time, they stay here. I wonder why?"

Bob, the usual answer to complains. You run away from anything you're criticizing? I think no. But it doesn't mean staying with one thing you're not allowed to criticize it. And to continue if the problems are not going away or are simply IGNORED.

Do you how much people did come and go away because they didn't like it? You see only the complainers but not the ones which fade away without saying anything.

For example I'm a new user to photo.net and yes I found a lot of good stuff here that I can't find on other pages. I'm glad not founding some sort of of kindish threads as on other pages. But I also see the problems which I have live with and I mention them. It's your right to ignore them. The decision whether I stay or not isn't still done. Maybe you're not interested in new people. But then you shouldn't complain if you can't get preproduction lenses from Canon as you complained in another thread. If you can offer the numbers of visitors you're not interesting for Canon. Simple, isn't it? You can't have both. You have always to make compromises. Also photo.net shouldn't rest on his laurels because one day it will find itself still sticking with the same people and wondering where time has gone.

It's a good page but it doesn't mean there isn't nothing to improve. Done in the right matter keeping up the good stuff, attracting new people, not offending existing one ...

You can't please everyone all the time. If more people join photo.net than leave, photo.net is doing OK. Complaints aren't ignored. They're just dealt with on the basis of optimum allocation of available resources, consistant with the internal goals and business plan of photo.net. That means photo.net doesn't act on every suggestion and photo.net's goals and plans for the site may not be the same as yours.

It's easy to tell someone else what they should do, it's a lot more difficult to do it. I run my own website in my own way according to my own goals and my own business plan. That way I have full control over every aspect of it. If it succeeds, I win. If it fails, I lose. You can do the same. So can photo.net.

Suggestions are welcome, but don't be in the least surprised if only a very small fraction of them are ever incorporated into the site. They're not ignored because the photo.net staff is too dumb or too arrogant to listen, they're rejected for one of a thousand different reasons - lack of time, lack of money, lack of staff, lack of resources, bad idea, impractical, too much work, not consistant with the business plan, not consistant with photo.net's internal goals and philosophy, they'd cause more problems than they solve etc., etc.

IMHO, there is a lot of value in brand identity and as far as photographic sites are concern, the photo.net mature, established appearance is something that I'm sure other sites wish they have. Over the years, additional functionalities were added, ableit slowly. The layouts and community interactions are distinctly photo.net. If photo.net were to change its look and interface to be like other newcomers, then it will just be a me-too proposition. In my view, DeviantART, Pbase, etc. actually have similar look and feel. Differentiation is working in favor of photo.net, IMO. Where photo.net stands now, is just fine with me. Starting off as a community building site, it has come a long, long way and given the fact that only a handful of highly capable folks are running this site (Brian, Bob, Jeremy, etc.,) I'd say it's pretty darn efficient as is.

Conclusively, with all due respect, I'm not with you on this one, Jon.

After reading all your comments, i have come to realise what a fool i am. I think why i posted this in the first place was mainly due to my frustration in not being able to find what i was looking for. Thanks to Bob Atkins i have opened a new and unexplored door. In summary, i think this site is great better in content than other sites and great resource. Of course it could do with improvements but then nothing is perfect (cliche i know). Cheers all for your reply and you have all convinced me, well done! :)

Simple, straight forward, friendly user interface. Nothing better. Don't need no stinkin' flash.... I'm hear to share and learn. 90% of the time it's a pleasent experience. Only pick, Firefox doesn't sign in well, but the upload sign in works just as well....Photos load extremely fast also. Kudos to all of the staff....
