melvin_bressler Posted April 2, 2004 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Jose: This works on my 65 year old IIIa, my 18 month old M7 and all the Leicas in between, as well as all leather cases: get an old cotton T shirt or similar. Be sure it is very clean. Use any quality leather cleaner; drip or spray a little on the cloth and gently rub in circles from the middle of the camera outwards. It will not hurt the metal parts, but you should wipe the metal parts clean afterwards. One local guy uses ArmorAll, a cleaner for automotive seating. Luigi Creszenzi says about his leather cases, use warm water and mild soap, or nothing. I'd be nervous about getting soap and water near the camera though. Don't be mad at those guys who make jokes. For someone who blows into the lens to remove dust, I have no answer for you too. I only wipe the viewfinders with my shirt. That's about it. Al's one of the most knowlegeable, resourceful, experienced, and good-natured contributors on all of photo.net. Many days, the humor here is at his expense, and he graciously plays along. Sooner or later, you'll benefit from his comments, as all of us have -- even if you didn't appreciate this particular comment, which I'm quite sure was not intended as a rebuke. To see an unusual approach to Leica restoration, and to see where I lost a bet (and ultimately, probably several ice cream cones) you might want to search photo.net under the terms 'leica' and 'rustoleum.' There was a time when I was one of the best in the world at what i did, and i never, ever brushed off a rookie question or expressed some of the ignorant comments I've seen here. Six months ago I found myself with a clean credit card and I'm so obtuse that instead of traveling to Europe with my M6 my pair of FM2's, I plunged for a new shiny black MP and an as new 50 summicron. Now I'm disappointed because some 50 or 60 rolls afterwards I feel cheated by Herr E. Puts by making me believe that by then it would look something like Winnogrand's M4. No dice; it still looks new! Some times I'm temped to use some emery cloth on it, but that would be cheating, right? How do people with a day job find the time to shoot 1000 rolls a year, not to mention subject matter? Should I quit mine, how do people without a job find the money for 1000 rolls? Life is so full of dilemmas... :-) PS, I'm not disappointed one bit with the camera tho.
