  2. It's because of Mike Dixon that I'm trying to master this stupid

    thing. Imagine how maddening it is to get the crap I'm getting from

    this beautiful lens, and turn around and see Mike's

    photography with it. I'm tempted to ask Mike to test mine. But I

    already know what the answer is.

  3. I've been using my 75/1.4 for a roll, and I intend on shooting quite a few rolls in it. It will be my only lens for awhile, or at least until I answer my only question about it: Can I really learn how to use it well?

    <p>

    My first complaint is, I can't focus it fast enough. Seems like I have to twist that thing seven times around before I can drop it down from inf. to 5 feet or so. I don't think I've EVER taken a sharp picture with it.<p>

    Well, anyway, my second complaint: A few years back, I shot my first roll with it. Every single shot came back blurry with sharp backgrounds that were, on average, 5-6 feet behind the subject that (I thought) I focused on. Back to Leica NJ it went. Oops, a month later I get notified that it had to go back to the Motherland because, presumably, that's where the beast was born. Nearly a year later I have my "repaired" lens in hand. Since then, I haven't taken a sharp photo with it. One reason is, I don't use it that much because it's heavy. Oh, that's my...<p>

    Third complaint: It's bloody heavy, and big, and even a bit heavier as you realize how big it is. Especially when you have the new motor drive attached. Great combo, that's for sure. Has a wonderful feel to it. But try walking through the china section of JCPenny with it under your coat. Looks like you've got a machine gun. Anway...<p>

    I'm about to process a roll that has shots taken with it on a tripod and focused on a home-made test chart so I can tell, for sure, how well it focuses now. I'm worried that one of two things is wrong, and it really doesn't matter which: 1) the lens is still faulty, which means that I may be 60 years old before I get it returned fixed; or 2) I just can't focus the damn thing. Ah heck. Things can't be all bad. We have our forum back.

  4. For what it's worth, or if there is anyone who would like to write to manx.net to report the abuse by our mosquito friend, here is a list of the IP addresses so far:<p>

    195.10.103.xxx<br>

    195.10.104.xxx<br>

    213.137.30.xxx<p>

    I guess the more people who avoid making complaints HERE and instead write to either the management of that ISP, or LUSENET, or whoever, the better for our situation.<p>

    Anyway. FYI.

    Please help me out. When you see offending posts that are vulgar or obscene, or obviously made to anger or attack another participant, PLEASE ignore them and refrain from making comment. Simply pretend the offending posts don't exist. Continue contributing yourself, even to the same thread as the offending post. You see, a <u>response from you</u> is just what they want! If, upon revisiting the thread in a day or so, you see the offending post still there, that means I missed it. You can <a href="mailto:rowlett@alaska.net">write to me</a> and I will tend to it. Meanwhile, I will make every effort to be more diligent in weeding out the childish stuff. Thanks for your patience and understanding and cooperation.

  6. It is very important to avoid making comments about abusive posts. The best thing to do is to <a href="mailto:rowlett@alaska.net">email me</a> and explain why you feel the post is offensive. I will take appropriate action. This is the ONLY way you can help me keep this forum clean. Our forum is getting large enough so that I cannot possibly read each and every post; at least not at the moment they are made. So I need your help. To publically criticize someone here will only ensure that one or both of the following will happen: 1) a flame war will erupt; 2) you will grant immense satisfaction on the part of the offender.

    <p>

    PLEASE let's keep this forum on track and friendly. There is simply no need to flame each other.

    <p>

    Thanks for your cooperation and support and constructive participation in this forum.<p> -- Tony

  7. <i>"What I'm thinking of is maybe a section of the forum which would

    allow folks

    to share their ideas about design changes/additions/ subtractions

    they'd like to see."</i>

    <p>

    Interesting idea, but other than an aperture priority M or a digital

    M, I'm not sure if there would be that many design changes wanted by

    this group. I may be wrong of course. Completely impossible would be

    a shutter priority M (new lenses would be needed). I've always

    thought the shutter speed better left to the user and f/stop better

    left to automation. That's why I've always liked my Canon QL17

    Canonnette. It just makes more sense to me.

  8. The lady who lets me live with her got me a print of the firemen raising the flag at ground zero - very touching. She said she ordered it in October and it didn't arrive until a week or so ago. Did Santa bring you anything cool (photographic) for the Holidays this year? Did you give any family members/spouse/friends any photographic gifts? Any Noctiluxes or Sumiluxes under the tree? Hmmm??
  9. Today I processed four rolls of film, each shot through my Leitz M6 and new Leica Motor M set always on slow, i.e. "1." In chronological order, rolls #1 and #4 clearly have frames exposed on top of one another, leaving roughly half of the entire roll unexposed. Apparently the film was feeding. Rolls #2 and #3, however, fed perfectly, i.e. frames #1 through #35 each clearly exposed and perfectly spaced.<p>

    Is this a problem with my film loading, or is this a problem with the camera? Time for a CLA? Hate the thought.

  10. Pretty strange. Aren't wide-angles cool? This is one of those

    "workable" images, e.g. you can experiment with different croppings

    and arrangements, maybe even turning the photo 45 degrees to the left

    or right yet maintaining an abstract feel. I try to minimize giving

    cropping suggestions, but I'll bet this would work well if you cropped

    out all the surroundings and included only his head, torso, and arms.

  11. <i>I've read some conflicting info about this: one post said

    that the HS only uses the whitest highlight and the darkest

    shadow that has been probed to compute its exposure. Another post said

    that the

    HS accepts probes of many spots of differing densities and then

    analyzes the density distribution over the entire grey-scale. Which is

    it?</i><p>

    The HS <i>does</i> accept probes of many spots of differing densities,

    but then analyzes only the extremes of what is probed, and then

    calculates an appropriate exposure with the assumption that the

    darkest probed area should land in zone 8, and the lightest probed

    area should land in zone 2 (approx.). It only needs two

    measurements, actually. The reason for the <i>user</i> to probe in

    more than the two areas of the projected image is that it is not

    always possible for the human eye to detect subtle differences in

    density in a given area of the image. As the probe unit reads

    densities, it beeps. Before long, it stops beeping as you pass the

    probe around the image because it is not detecting areas that are

    either brighter or darker than what is already probed. In other

    words, as you move the probe around, it will beep whenever it detects

    a brighter or darker area. From the two greatest extremes, it then

    calculates the exposure based on what paper you have selected. I hope

    this makes sense.

  12. The server greenspun.com, which is this forum's current home, is being taken off line. Luckily, Philip Greenspun and the photo.net full-timers are working on a way to assimilate our forum into the <a href="http://www.photo.net">photo.net</a> service. Our forum will live! I received word today that this should all take place after the holidays some time. I will continue to be the forum moderator. They will provide me with a heads-up notice shortly before the transfer.
