As a studio shot, it seems to me to need less contrast, a little more light from the right, a lighter background, and bringing the background light on her hair up to shine through more of her hair behind her. The angle and pose is appealing.

I like the concept, but I would have included more sky. Put the rail fence about a third of the way from the bottom. Also put it on a tripod and use a small aperture to get more depth of field.
  1. This is a good example of what is possible with 300mm. To increase the impact with a longer focal length, I think you would have had to move further away in proportion to increasing your focal length. Twice the distance from the people with twice the focal length would have kept the people relatively the same size, while increasing the apparent size of the sun.

To me, it would have been a little more appealing with a warmer color of light. What color was the light to your eye when you took the photo?

In any case, I'm impressed with your result as it stands.

    Colorful Beetle

We found this beetle crawling on the driveway, and I thought it would

make an interesting photo. I shot with Portra 160 VC film in full

sun on a piece of construction paper, scanned, and darkened a little,

boosted saturation, and sharpened slightly. Your comments on the

photo and my approach are appreciated.

    Nature- Flower

I find close shots of flowers very appealing. This one appears to me to be in pretty sharp focus, and parallel to the film plane, which is a good angle for this case. The colors are fantastic. But I think this photo would be much more dramatic if you put something jet black behind the flower and its stem, big enough to cover the whole frame, and far enough back so that the background (whatever you use to get black) was out of focus. Also, using a reflector to throw some light into the dark shadow on the top petals would be an improvement in my opinion. This is a nice flower, and a good photo.
