    I don't think it's too dark - in fact there is barely any blacks at all. But I do think that you need more contrast - the uniform greys are what's making it feel so dark.

    I agree that the photo looks best when the bottom stones have been cropped off. I think too often we believe that our subjects must be centered in order to draw the eye to them. However, I have found that in many cases, a subject that is either slightly or even completely off-center works the best.
