  1. As a student of the Minor White/Edward Weston (Weston's work of his partner notwithstanding), I have not made many attempts at nudes, much less portraits of any kind. However, as much as I enjoy other's work, I am wanting to start experimenting in this venue. It's not a matter of availability of models, I just had no real idea where to start as this topic has usually been discussed as art vs. porn or other pedestrian catagory.

I know what good art is, and I recognize an effective nude as much as I would an effective equivelant, but I have never been able to pin point what it is I am seeing that is expressing what I am feeling.

I appreciate that you have such an eloquent way of expressing your thoughts behind your fine photos and the direction you bring the discussion of nudes. It is refreshing and informative. I also think that some of your comments in this thread can apply to portraiture in general.

Thank you for your comments. I developed it with HC-110 dil B and printed it on Ilford Multi-Grade IV. No toning. I adjusted the scanned image to try and make it look closer to the original.
  2. I agree with Mr. Rabkin's comments and example. I don't know what your originals look like, but I assume -- like me -- they are printed on photo paper and scanned. I just started scanning mine and submitting them to photo.net, and they displayed washed and faded like yours. I made some adjustments via photshop and updated the files, and they do look closer to the originals. They are still a cry from what they look like in real life.
  3. Outstanding portrait in it's own right. Displays character, personality, emotion -- you feel like you know the kid. Isn't that a successful protrait? An artistic creation of any medium must stand on it's merits as it sits for display. If a mistake or an error results in a success -- then it is a success. A boring or unremarkable photo is boring or unremarkable, no matter how technically perfect it is. Once it is displayed, technical data doesn't count anymore (except to students that want to better understand the process or anal retentive poseurs who think there doing us a service (sorry, couldn't hold it back)). If it works - IT WORKS!

I love your B&W work in your "Cartier-Bresson" folder. Keep up the good work.
