1. Hi Bill,

I like the way Frank thinks! Unfortunately, as you know, there are no threads on the F5 or N90s.

I shoot the news. I bought a used Nikon infrared remote trigger, and not the newest kind. It was about $ 150 from KEH. It's got a 3 pin plug, but you can get an adapter that plugs into the 10 pin plugs on your cameras.

I've fired it from 400 feet away outdoors, which is well over its stated range. But that was line of sight. I'm not sure how well it would work outdoors, but in a forest.

I've also got a Pocket Wizard radio transmitter and receiver to fire my strobes, but you can get a cable to hook the receiver up to your Nikon, and fire it with the button on the transmitter.

Quantum Instruments makes a Radio Slave with less range that's cheaper, and I'm sure it'll fire a camera, too.

I admire your patience. Reading this site has really made me appreciate the great Nature and Wildlife images I've seen.

    Cheers and God bless,

  2. Hi Djuna,

Long ago, in a lifetime far far away, I used to be a cop.

I have a question you might pose at an opportine time: Why didn't the ET (Enforcement Type) call to you come off the beach instead of going out on the beach herself, thereby increasing the "harassment?" Either humans BEING there is harmful or it's not. So, which is it.

Now an observation. You need to be aware of the "I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong" factor. So try not to appear that you think you know more than they do, especially when you do. You were careful to leave the, er, bull an out; might work on other kinds of bulls, too. And let the ET know very clearly that you are not challenging their right to enforce; then they can choose not to.

    Cheers and God bless,

  3. Hi Gene,

What I don't know about Nature Photography would fill an ocean, so I hope you'll indulge me in a few remarks.

    Film cost.

I would compare the difference in cost of your preferred film to the cost of the *trip*, not to the cost of the cheaper film. When people look at your images, do you want them to compliment you on the money you saved? Five years from now, you are not going to remember how you spent the money you "saved."

    Changing Midroll

I shoot the news. I carry a Sharpie indelible marker in my vest, and write the last frame number right on the film leader's emulsion side. Then I bend over a half inch or so of the leader, to signal me that it's partly exposed.

When you reload this roll into the camera, cover not only the lens, but also the view finder as you fire off the the number previously exposed frames. I always go a couple beyond, too, to be safe. I learn from my mistakes. I can repeat them perfectly.

    Changing Film Speed Midroll

If I absolutely have to save what I've already shot on the roll, and I absolutely don't have time to change, I memorize the frame number (and write it on the film later along with the new speed) and fire off several, at least three, dupes of the subject, and then go on normally. The dupes are to give me leeway when I cut the film in the darkroom. I would cut the film yourself, and then take it to the lab. Reload it into the camera, Go dark. Fire off the number of frames you wrote, open the camera and cut. Leave the rest rewound in the cassette. Just be sure which half is which speed! =) Like I didn't a few times.

Have a great time, and be sure to wear running shoes. No, you can't outrun a tiger, but you can outrun whoever you're with!

    Cheers and God bless,
