This picture is o.k. but the subject isn't defined well enough for my tastes. It could be the dog, it could be the door, but they don't function together so the end affect i perceive is rather flat. I'm uncomfortable with the negative space on the right. I think I would have taken this at an angle if possible, making the dog the foreground subject. I really like the concrete, and I think the grey helps carry the palette of which is otherwise weak. The green is nice, but doesn't fit the composition.

Did you take other pictures of this subject?

  1. This photo documents the existence of the tower. However, I don't feel it expresses anything about the tower or the experience of viewing it (this is just my opinion).

I would pick a point of focus on the structure (perhaps the light in the tower, or the water line) and experiment by cropping the image, or reducing your DOF.

I would probably remove the plaza on the lower right, I think it's distracting from the subject. Also, the lines of the structure are uncomfortable in this photo...that's something I would explore in this subject.

Taken at another time of day, you could experiment with the relationship of the tower to its environment. Against the black sky and dark water, though, this is a photo solely about the tower.

This is indeed a nice photo, but I do not feel the bottom 1/3rd of the photo contributes to the image. I would have gotten close to the root located center and let the primary subject provide the lines to drive the eye to the focal point. To accomodate the entire image, I would have gone with something c. 20-35mm.

The warmth of the light provides an interesting contrast with such a sad subject (imho), and in my opinion is the most interesting aspect of the photo.

I think that this photo has a pretty classical, standard

composition. Any suggestions on how it might be cropped to create a

better story? Other comments on the photo welcome, of course! :)

  2. Love the colors and composition, but I wonder if a shorter exposure at a wider aperture couldn't have produced a similar effect.

The water is extremely ethereal, and very pleasing. Likewise, the color and detail on the rocks and moss is beautiful. The detail and softer green top center (background, past the rocks) is distracting for me, however. I don't know whether the same effect on the water could have been acheived by opening up a stop or more, but I'd be interested to see it if you had taken that variation.

A photo to be proud of, though, no doubt.
