  1. It wouldn't be useful as a camera holder, since it doesn't really lock in place in the horizontal axis, which isn't a problem with holding a light. As for replacing a magic arm, the minimum length is quite a bit longer than a magic arm at full extension, so probably not.

I am thinking I might be able to use the magic arm to hold the softbox if I attach it to a table at the proper height. Hope that works out.

    Thanks for your help :)

  2. Is this a permanent set up or something you will need to move around? If it is permanent you should look into a Manfrotto wall mounted boom. It isn't super expensive and will hold your light easily, I routinely use one in my studio with a White Lightning X 1600 with soft boxes and other modifiers.

I would prefer to have a flexible option which I can move around but this does seem like an interesting alternative. Thanks. I will check it out. Can this replace the magic arm as well? As in can it also hold my camera facing down, if needed?

  3. So I am looking to purchase a Westcott Octabox. It weighs 3 pounds plus the flash which is pretty light.

I will be working indoors so wind is not a factor. Looking for the lightest possible stand. Currently have the Manfrotto Nano Stands for LEDs and flash. But since those only support up to 3 pounds I am guessing the Octabox might be stretching it.

Now the only thing is I will need to use the Octabox pointing down on the table....and i really do not want to go for a heavy stand with boom. Is there a simpler option? Will say a Manfrotto Friction Magic arm work for this? Or a simpler option that I am not considering?
