  1. I too am right-handed and left-eyed, but I've never had a problem using any of the cameras I've had over the years. Just the other day, my wife asked me if I kept my right eye open when photographing, and I told her no but that I'd never really thought about it. I tried it for a while and didn't like it -- very distracting. I'd much rather focus with just my left eye and let the camera keep my right eye covered. I've always had good eyesight in both eyes, but over the years my right eye has lagged a bit behind my left in terms of acuity, according to my doc. I don't know whether that could be a cause or an effect of being left-eyed -- probably neither, as out of the doctor's office I can't really tell the difference. I haven't ever tried a purpose-built left eyed camera, so don't know if I would prefer it. Probably not, after having used standard cameras for so many years.
  2. Good points, Sam. I wouldn't call he misplacement of a salad fork a matter of manners, however. To me that seems more like superficial etiquette. By manners I mean behavior that takes into account the comfort or feelings of others. I don't think that manners are ever absolute or always necessary, but it would be nice to prevent users from being unnecessarily confused. On the other hand, I have no good argument against the values of surprise, playfulness, homage, or continuity. And when I have been momentarily confused by starting to read a "dated" thread without knowing its age, I must admit that I have never thought "well, that was rude!" So I cede to your better judgment on the issue.
  3. Perhaps it would be useful, if reviving an old thread, to start off the new post with "Continuing a thread from 1999..." This would at least be good manners.
  4. I've had problems with paper being poorly packed by Adorama, but maybe only once or twice with B&H -- just minor pings in the corners (which still annoy me). I use a lot of Epson papers and have found that the best source for those is Epson itself -- pretty fast and very solidly packed. Given my proximity to NYC, B+H might be faster (often overnight using regular postage) but the excellent condition in which papers from Epson arrive makes them the more common for me, especially for larger papers. I also buy a lot of Red River paper and it has always arrived in pristine condition. As to used equipment, I have usually used KEH, but have heard many good things about Roberts in Indianapolis. Family members who lived in Indianapolis also rated it highly as a local store.
  5. No, that solution has been suggested before but that solution is not activated for everyone. I may not it because my pro status isn't recognized by the system, or it could be limited to moderators. In any case, not an option for me for the time being.
  6. Also no responses after several requests starting shortly after the migration began. I used to be rws, but now I'm rws followed by 10 random numbers.
  7. Yes, I've noticed myself. I normally upload my pictures with jpeg quality between 93 and 95 (depending on the size of the photo -- I try to keep size under 1mb). Universally my uploaded pics are recompressed to jpeg quality of 85, with 2x2 chroma subsampling, reducing the final size of the image from 800 or 900 kb to 200-400 kb. I agree with Timo - this kind of modification should not happen on a serious photo site.
  8. I think that you are right. I guess I was asking a rhetorical question. And I agree, it does seem like a coding issue, so I'm not sure why it would be hard to change. I guess the logcal next step would be to pm matt jensen.
  9. Sandy, Just as an experiment, I tried to establish a new account on PN starting with my old username, rws. I get an error message saying that I can't use rws because that name is already being used by another user. But that other user doesn't seem to be me, since I am now (apparently) rws1664886018. Is there really another rws? If so, how did that user get the name that I have used for years? None of this makes sense to me.
  10. If there are issues with EU law, could the relevant points be summarized in a sticky post here?
  11. Mickey and samstevens, you have both presented realistic evaluations of and responses to the developments within PN. I think that my level of patience with the site is lower than yours, however, mainly because I am so dissatisfied with its look and feel. It seems too disorganized and too poorly planned, is rather bland, and too many parts of the site seem incomplete and disconnected. Given the devotion of existing PN users, the process of conversion has taken place too much in a black box with little attention to user issues and to the communication of future plans. I grow increasingly concerned that those in charge will lack the resources and motivation to complete the conversion satisfactorily. I will maintain my interest in PN for the time being, but increasingly will do so from a distance
  12. It would be nice to have regular updates from Admin that recognize the existence of such problems and identify what progress is being made to fix them (and how long such fixes are likely to take).
  13. I'll start. One common complaint is that it is not possible to scroll through an individual's work. A little investigation reveals that when you try to scroll through an image in your "images content," you go to images that follow yours in one of the categories in Explore>Gallery. That seems to be where individual photos are "placed" -- in an Explore>Gallery category and not in a gallery of your specific work. So, for example, a photo of mine that appears in the Travel category sits (metaphorically, I guess) next to other Travel photos and not next to other rws... photos. This arrangement seems somewhat strange to me and not at all how most people want to access their work. This seems like a basic flaw in the system which should be fixed.
  14. As to just ignoring the things that irritate me, I can tolerate a bit of that. My main concern is that these irritations will come to reflect an overall change in the character of the site. You're right, though, za33photo, assuming that we still will have galleries to which we can post, it might be useful to continue to use the site. Regardless, I still hope to remain involved in posting photos to forums.
  15. Yes, I know about gamification and its success in some contexts. In one form or another, it's been around for a while. But I don't have much patience for it, as you can probably tell. Anyway, here's hoping the updated menu system proves to be a success. When the core part of a system works, many of the other irritations can be ignored.
  16. Unfortunately, much of the above suggests to me that Invision may not be the best platform for a revitalized Photo.net. I don't know why some of the problems with gallery access and functionality weren't anticipated. before the conversion started. If it is indeed necessary to put up with the "hard to drill down to menu coming out of Profile Activity," I'll continue (reluctantly) moving my galleries elsewhere. I agree with you strongly that the Reaction/Rating system is not appropriate for a site like Photo.net. It seems to my antiquated brain to be very juvenile to me (something like putting stickers on grade school homework) and would be useless to me. I feel the same way about the "Leaderboard" under Explore. Sharing and enjoying photography is not a competition. What is the purpose of the leaderboard. Again, rather juvenile. On the other hand, I would not like having a 1-5 star rating system averaged across all reviews. This kind of star rating systems has very little value in my opinion -- maybe for rating vacuum cleaners or roofers but not for something as complex as photography which has no universal metric for assessing quality. And while I'm at it, I would get rid of the badges ("Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges," as they say in the movies) and the equally obnoxious Rank system. How does it help me to know that I am a Grand Master? How does it help anyone else to know that I have that rank? The ranks seem designed to establish some kind of status system that has no purpose on an art-sharing site. Just my two cents, but the above foolishness reinforces my dissatisfaction and frustration with the new site. I'm not willing to give up on Photo.net yet because I have gotten so much from it in past: insight, inspiration, humor, even profundity. But after nearly 4 weeks of this conversion, I am very close. My future interaction is likely to limited to only a few forum categories. I hope that future developments and fixes can change my mind about this.
  17. I am in the same boat as Mickey and Robin. I can find three ways to see my photos: under My Attachments (i'm not sure what the point of this part of the site is), on Explore>Gallery (which doesn't provide a way for me to manage my portfolio), and in the list of All Activity, which far down the list has entries for Images (which provide little functionality) and Albums (which contains nothing). All Activity is accessible through the Find Content link on the little window that opens up when I hold my mouse of the little avatar in the upper right corner of s site page, so it is pretty well hidden away. None of the above provide the kind of access to my portfolio that I had under the old photo.net, and clearcut connections among the three. Each provides a way to delete a photo, but the photo needs to be deleted separately on all three. I would like to see much more transparency about how the conversion is going and, especially, what the final product will look like. All we've been told, if I remember correctly, is that the site will not look the same as it once did. Not very useful information, and I am losing confidence in how useful the new site will ultimately be. I have moved most of my photos to Flickr and have started deleting them from photo.net, but I plan to keep involved in some way with photo.net, if only for the photo posting opportunities in the forums (No Words, etc.).
  18. I've seen a number of useful changes in the new site over the past ~2 weeks, but the conversion also seems to me to be very slow. There are all kinds of minor issues (display names changes, for one), but also some larger, important ones. Access to our image galleries and albums probably ranks at the top. I would also list recognition of existing pro members (my pro membership is good until 2025 but hasn't been recognized yet by the site). I'm also bothered by the overall look of the site, with things too widely spaced on the page, amid too much white and requiring too much scrolling to get through lists of things (e.g., forum names). Some experimenting with the display scale suggests to me that many pages on the site are primarily designed for mobile devices, the long, thin "mobile" web design clearly visible by reducing the display's zoom factor to 25% on my laptop. Are there plans to make this a "responsive" website, adapting to make it easy to use on a variety of devices (pc, tablet, mobile)? The current sparse, widely spaced layout is a pain to use on a pc or laptop, at least in my experience. And for a photography site, the web design seems to be rather colorless (although this may be fine-tuning best left for the end of the conversion).
