1. they are into the "pay" scenario. Even the CEO said that he will not set a paywall "immediately", which means that it will be under a paywall. Which also means that I don't care of a pay website. At all. lol . what Phil created was beautiful, now it's another ads and infomercials galore and the forums are a bright example of how bad and ferocious social media can get. Oh well.....
2. https://www.audacy.com/1010wins/news/local/man-sues-taco-bell-for-usd5-million-for-false-advertising I am a commercial photographer and I'm reviewing my coverage because I believe that it's only a matter of time before somebody in court asks "who" prepared the item or their lawyers will try to blame the studio (to don't pay). The weight of the charge stays with the diffusion of the material (and not the production) but still... take a look at your liability coverage and your agreement with the agency or marketing departments ...
3. exactly: for those activities is the best, the cheap imitations on ebay are good as well (same thing). I went for the collapsible (genuine) because is collapsible but I also use the imitations in studio for casual stuff. the best diffuser is a white ceiling, and the absolute best is a scrim (flash bounced off the ceiling with the diffuser (plexiglass or PVC paper) close to the subject and away from the light source. softboxes are pretty much useless because the diffuser is WAY too close to the strobe and won't diffuse anything (but will eat a couple of stops of power. the second best is this gary fong, hands down. and works ok for dark ceiling as well (but white are better)
4. I post this under EOS mount because there is no Sub for canon mirrorless yet. This is important if you own a Canon R5 or R6. There is a petition on change dot org and many (MANY) complaints on social media abut the hot shoe being loose after 6-10 months of use. If your camera is still under warranty then send it to Canon to fix it, immediately. Don't wait. This WILL happen, it will only be a matter of time. The repair out of warranty will cost 4-500 US dollars. There are DIY clever solutions (like this one on youtube But will risk to void the warranty. Most likely is a combination of mistakes that Canon made assembling it. Missing glue of the screws holding the shoe (from the inside), and a wrong size of the holes in the shoe receiving the screws. That may result in a temporary fix if only a glue is applied to the screws . In other words without replacing the shoe part with the correct size of the holes then it may happen again in a year or so. My advice is to send it to Canon while under warranty to fix it, and send it immediately. At least will buy you anther year of use without the flash falling off or misfiring.
5. great post, it's good to know : if you are an amateur then that place is not for showing off your gear. if you are a professional and the couple still want to shoot there then you must be prepared: that place is well known for that, there are signs literally everywhere warning abut it. Get a cloud service (like the the canon+google one (20 bucks a year) and transfer via phone), get a good insurance and absolutely categorically don't fight it. what you don't do is going there unprepared and hope for the best.
6. pro sport use a lens attached to a camera. The lens comes first, depending on the sport: football and soccer: 300mm 2.8 on a cropped sensor, 400mm 2.8 on a full frame. Mandatory. if a camera doesn't "sport" that lens then the user is an amateur, not a pro. because? the pictures that sell are from those two lenses
7. the equipment reviews and editorials were first class , so it's a good thing. But the forum moderators (working for free) are desperate. ellis vener (amateur) begging to stay in touch with him and publishing his email. LOL Phil sold the site to Bezos, made a lot of money and disappeared. Good for him. Bezos closed it immediately when it wasn't making money. Chris and Jordan found anther gig right away and probably kept the camerastore sponsor (they don't work for free). good for them. but the free moderators need to pause and get out more, fresh air. don't stay attached to social media in a room 24hr for free. That's idiotic LOL
8. tell the story? to whom? the journalists replaced the PJ positions and jobs, not really the amateurs. And this is going on since..5-6 years now. There are agencies (AP, France press, Reuters, Getty) covering only the major events now in stills. The rest comes from the cell phones of the journalist and not a staff PJ anymore (again this is OLD news actually). For "sports" it gets even worse. Now ask yourself this (simple fact): your fav team... you wanna see the video highlights of a game or the stills? in any case printed publications are dead. Only google pics stands (because it's free and thanks to the money that they paid to kill the orphan works they are de facto the biggest stills agency in the world (free in exchange of your data)
9. exactly. DPR was huge because of the digital revolution in the photography business (stills) years ago. there is a simple explanation as of why the entire photography business is dead: streaming and cell phones. nobody cares about stills anymore. the main professions used to be sports, fashion, news (printed), weddings and events. 40,000 sports pro stills operators worldwide for example became 2,000 because now I want to watch the video stream of a game and not the stills (and I am a photographer). The same with news (I want to see the video and not the stills) What's left? products (everybody buys by mail and products must be sold with a good picture) advertising and fashion (in part). The digital enthusiasts moved back to film recently and the amateurs use the cell phone instead. I own a studio and my work is now 90% products and advertising. Nothing else. Times change , people.
10. DPR was HUGE under Phil Askey. It's not about age in my opinion. And a website cost nothing to maintain : if Bezos decided to close it down like that then must be because of something else, not just the money. But let's be honest now: DPR under Phil Askey was beautiful, hands down the best website of any kind I see around, even today.
11. the website was HUGE under Phil Askey. Became a gadgetmania nonsense under Amazon
12.
same problem with a 20D for months, cleaned the pin and then again but still the error (the flash does popup, 2 clicks and then error 05). Then one day I changed the date-time battery (just because... it was working fine with the old one, at least that's what I thought) and BINGO! Flash popups and no error anymore. It was the cmos battery. CR2016 for the 20D. It's working fine for a couple of weeks now.
