  1. You are invited to upload one or more of your landscape photos and, if you’d like, to accompany your image with some commentary: challenges you faced in making the image? your intent for the image? settings? post-processing decisions? why you did what you did? the place and time? or an aspect you’d like feedback on? And please feel free to ask questions of others who have posted images or to join the discussion. If you don’t feel like using words, that’s OK too—unaccompanied images (or unaccompanied words, for that matter) are also very much welcomed. As for the technicalities, the usual forum guidelines apply: files < 1 MB; image size <1000 px maximum dimension.

From a walk I took this afternoon (I had to seriously bump up the ISO to get everything in focus):

Here’s an odd one. I didn’t mess with the color on this—the “B&W” background is foggy, but there’s full sun in the foreground. I exposed to avoid blowing out the foreground, so the background is underexposed, making it look even more colorless.

More frost on the dunes. No pixels were harmed in the making of this image.

After my clone-fest from last week, I figured it was about time for my annual paean to the powerline (aka, the clonement atonement). And no, this isn’t B&W. This is the normal color of the sky on the northern California coast.

It was a bit of a sprint to find a good silhouette before the light changed. This is a 4-frame panorama, minus a few power lines.

I almost left the power lines in because Lightroom did such an exuberant job of defying gravity--I liked the shapes it came up with. Here's Lightroom's (very) original version of the merge:

It occurred to me that I hardly ever use a square format for my landscape photos, so I figured I should remedy that. Here's a miniature landscape from my local coastal dunes, brought to you courtesy of frost and beach-grass.

Pampas grass is nasty stuff, but it almost redeems itself when backlit.

It "never" snows here, but this is what it looked like almost exactly a year ago.

On Saturday night my local river experienced its highest flow since the near-legendary Flood of ’64, having fielded more than 10” of rain in 72 hr in parts of its basin. I didn’t venture out with my camera until the next morning, after the stage had dropped about 6 feet at this location. This is as far as I got along the river trail, which, in theory, extends a bit farther toward the trees before turning left. Or at least it used to.

Taken this afternoon during a light rain on my local river--the calm before the storm predicted for tonight. This may be my smallest focal point yet.

Remember the days when the most complicated aspect of a new camera was learning how to load the film? Well, my new camera has a 963-page manual, rivaling the length of the textbook for my year-long university physics class. (I’ll admit it: I’m enjoying this)

I suppose this is an attempt to make up for my rather pathetic representation of green last week. Meanwhile, my 80D stopped communicating with its lenses a few months ago, and I found out that it was going to cost about the equivalent of a new mirrorless to get it fixed. The new mirrorless arrives tomorrow.
