The lighting of this picture is very unique in it's subtlety. I think the artist here is trying to illustrate a deep inner conflict by using light and dark contrasts with skin vs cloth, eye color, and the sun coming through venetians. I am moved by the extraordiary depth of contrast in this piece of art.
