What do I think the chances are? Zero.
Nikon already has two "killer" lenses in that range - the 105 2.0 DC and the 135 2.0 DC.
-
Subject line says it all. Any recommendations or issues of which I
should be aware?
-
pc or mac doesn't matter - its a nikon curve.
The original Nikon curves are always there - right in the camera menu.
-
Why would I want to do that, Todd? I don't shoot with a full frame film camera, those results would be meaningless to me. Was that suppoed to be some sarcastic comment about film vs digital or something?
-
Got mine 2 days ago. Very high quality plastic, solid, heavy for its
size, zoom. Focus and zoom rings initially a bit tight but have
loosened to correct feel after a couple days of intense usage. Tiny
included shade looks completely useless but then how could one cover
the large range of this lens with one hood? Mounted to my D100 the
combination acheives about perfect balance and the zoom range
provides great versatility (36mm - 180mm). The VR functions really
well and is actually quite visible in the viewfinder. Sure I could
achieve the same exposures using a 2.8 or 2.o prime lens at a faster
shutterspeed but then I would be carrying a bag full of Nikon's
heaviest lenses. This one is a late serial number (22xxxx) and I am
quite sure the early problems with sharpness have been worked out.
Mine is sharp across the field (although on the D100 the field is
smaller than on 35mm format. At this time I would recommend this
lens without reservation.

<<On our D100 with primes and the pro zooms, the differences between jpeg and NEF are definitely visible within PS.>>
Sure they are visable "within PS", I'm talking about the print result.
-
-
My test have been in the real world. I have taken images saved as RAW and jpeg, made the best print from both and could discern no visable differences. In addition, using a RAW file(actually NEF) and varying the exposure comp slider while at the same time observing the histogram, I see the histogram shift intact along its axis - exactly as it does when you do a levels adjustment.
-
One of the big advantages of using the RAW format is the ability to
change the exposure value after the picture has been taken. Or at
least thats what some say. I dont believe it. I think this is
nothing more than could be done with a jpeg in Photoshop using levels
or curves.
Regardless of how you interpret the info from the sensor when you do
your RAW conversion, the fact remains that you used some combination
of shutter speed and aperture this cannot be changed. If the
pixels were driven into overexposure no amount of interpretation
after the fact will recover that blown out highlight. On the other
side, if you underexposed, yes you can raise the values for the
pixels, but you can do exactly the same with Photoshop.

Whew!!
Anyone else have some good stuff to share?
-
It isn't auto insurance that covers contents of your car, it is your homeowners policy. This happened to me and my Homeowners replaced everything with brand new equipment.
-
I duct taped my pop up flash down so that I won't be tempted to use it....
-
"And no sane and knowledgeable person would use direct flash for people shots, but people are shot on negative film anyway, so D isn't really needed."
My, you live in a highly structured world, don't you?
-
"© use of linear processing to recover highlights, "
Can you explain this process? Thanks!
-
If it's an Amtrak train I'd take the 20, if Canadian National I'd go with the 24.
-
Create a duplicate layer, convert it to B&W using the technique you prefer. Then take the eraser tool and erase the color back in where you want it.
-
Consensous seems to be that the camera underexposes to make sure highlight aren't blown out. There are a number of custom tone curves that you can download or you can make up your own to deal with the problem. To load the curves into the camera you need Nikon capture3. You can use the 30 day demo to do this.
-
It is the constant 2.8 lens alright, but it isn't the D version.
-
I need a high quality zoom in the range of aprox 70 up to 135 or even
200. What is the scoop on the best in that range? I am looking for
a lighter alternative to the 80-200 2.8. Thanks!

Well, let's see:
10D: magnesium alloy body
D100: polcarbonate plastic body
No evidence shows one is better than the other- Besides, D100 does have a metal subassembly, so what if the covering is plastic.
10D: mirror lock
D100: no mirror lock
Not true again, D100 has mirror prelock, just as effective maybe more convenient.
10D: electronic cable release
D100: mechanical cable release
Wrong again, D100 has both. Elect on grip, mech on body.
10D: automatic image rotation (sensors record the orientation of the camera-- 90 degrees left, landscape, 90 degrees right-- and imbeds this information with image, so you don't have to rotate the images manually when reviewing or downloading them. Saves you a lot of time.)
D100: no automatic image rotation
10D: CMOS, very low-noise images, particularly with long exposures
100D: CCD, images not as smooth, not as noise-free
This is simply not true or at best a matter of taste.
10D: 7 autofocus points. Outer-most sensors happen to correspond perfectly to 8x10 proportions.
D100: 5 autofocus points.
Big deal.
10D: registered autofocus point, allows you to jump to any designated autofocus sensor with press of a button
D100: no registered autofocus point
10D: 3fps, 9 image burst in all shooting modes: RAW, TIFF, and JPEG
D100: 3fps, 3 image burst in RAW; 3fps, 5 image burst in TIFF; 3fps, 6 frame burst in JPEG
10D: goes down to ISO 100
D100: goes down to ISO 200
D100 does not need to go down to 100 since 200 is noiseless.

Anyone know?

"from the mamiya lenses: hard to get details in the shadows really..."
I tried to let this pass but I cannot.
Excessive contrast in your negatives is not a function of the lens.
Prefer umbrella rather than SoftBox?
